BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following a strong 2015 campaign, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team has handed out its team awards. Senior Lauren Willcox earned both the Athlete and Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards while classmate Kelly Scott garnered the Coaches Award. The Mountain Hawks also named their captains for 2015-16 as Lehigh eyes its third straight Patriot League Tournament appearance.
Â
Willcox received two impressive honors, being named Scholar-Athlete of the Year for a second straight season and Athlete of the Year for the first time. The Chester Springs, Pa. native owns a stellar 3.74 cumulative GPA as a Biology major, earning Dean's List multiple times for a semester GPA over 3.6. She's earned Academic All-Patriot League honors each of the last two seasons and has been named All-League three times, including first team honors as a junior and senior. Willcox finished her senior season second on the team with 26 caused turnovers to go with 19 groundballs and 11 draw controls. Beyond any statistics, she has consistently held down the opponents' leading scorers. Willcox posted a career-high five caused turnovers against Fairfield this season which helped her win Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week laurels, recording multiple caused turnovers eight times in 2015. For her career, the team co-captain finished with 72 groundballs and 63 caused turnovers.
Â
Scott earned the Coaches Award for a third straight season. An All-League member for the first time in 2015 (a second team honoree), Scott was recognized by the Lehigh Valley Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women on Tuesday as the valley's Outstanding Lacrosse player. A two-time team captain, Scott tallied 21 groundballs and 20 caused turnovers this past season to finish her career with 85 and 54, respectively. Scott led a defense which allowed single-digit goals in 13 of 17 games on the year, including the last nine contests. Lehigh's goals against average of 8.06 was third best in the Patriot League.
Â
In addition, rising senior Kendall Garden and rising junior Allison LaBeau were named team captains. Both All-Patriot League honorees in 2015, Garden was named to the first team for the first time. A strong two-way player, she led the Mountain Hawks in caused turnovers (31) and finished third with 34 points (24 goals, 10 assists). LaBeau led the Mountain Hawks in scoring, tallying 48 points behind 34 goals and 14 assists. They take over for Willcox and Scott who served as team captains in 2014-15.
Â
The Mountain Hawks wrapped up a strong season highlighted by a seven-game road winning streak, a road win against Rutgers in front of a nationally-televised audience and the team's second straight postseason appearance. Lehigh's defense was especially strong as the Mountain Hawks finished the season 9-8 and earned the #5 seed in the Patriot League Tournament.
