
Mountain Hawks travel to Iona Tuesday, announce upcoming weekend schedule

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Patriot League tournament-bound Lehigh baseball team will travel to Iona Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in the first of three non-league tune-ups to be played before next weekend's Patriot League Semifinals. The Mountain Hawks have added a Saturday doubleheader against DeSales to their schedule, which will be played at Legacy Park with first pitch slated for noon.
Lehigh is coming off a 3-1 series win at Lafayette over the weekend that propelled the Mountain Hawks into the No. 2 seed in the Patriot League Tournament. Lehigh will host No. 3 Holy Cross in the Patriot League Semifinals in a best-of-three series May 9-10 at Legacy Park. The Mountain Hawks used five home runs and strong pitching performances to help secure 5-4 and 4-2 wins Saturday at Lafayette. Senior Justin Pacchioli broke Lehigh's career stolen bases record in game one, while junior reliever Kevin Boswick secured saves in both of the day's games. The Leopards were able to pick up a 3-0 win in Sunday's opener, but Lehigh bounced back with a 5-3, 10-inning win in the series finale to secure the series win and No. 2 seed. Sophomore Jacen Nalesnik led Lehigh offensively throughout the weekend with an 8-for-15 (.533) showing at the plate.
Junior Mike Garzillo leads the Mountain Hawks for the season with a .361 batting average and league-best marks of 38 RBI, seven home runs and a .595 slugging percentage. Pacchioli leads the Patriot League with 23 stolen bases and a .489 on-base percentage to go along with his .349 batting average and team-best 38 runs scored. Sophomore Patrick Donnelly (27) and Nalesnik (25) rank second and third, respectively, on the Lehigh squad in RBI.
Iona carries a 12-29 overall record into Tuesday's game and the Gaels have lost their last four games. Iona was outscored by Rider 16-2 in a three-game series over the weekend. The Gaels are hitting .221 as a team, led by Vinny DeMaria's .275 batting average. Matt Byrne (.269) and Travis Mistretta (.267) are the only other Iona players hitting above .250. DeMaria leads the squad with 22 RBI, while Jimmy Guiliano has scored a team-best 24 runs. The Gaels' pitching staff holds a team ERA of 5.48.
The Mountain Hawks opened up their season against Iona with a four-game series played in South Carolina in February. The Gaels earned 6-4 and 11-8 wins in the first two games before Lehigh picked up a 2-0, 11-inning win and 7-4 victory in the final two contests. Senior Nick Macaione and Boswick combined to throw an 11-inning no-hitter and Pacchioli hit the walk-off home run in Lehigh's 2-0 win.
Following Tuesday's game at Iona, Lehigh will host DeSales Saturday before opening up the Patriot League Tournament against No. 3 Holy Cross on Saturday May 9 at Legacy Park.
