WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Lehigh softball team opened up its spring break trip to Florida with a pair of shutout victories on Saturday. Sophomore Christine Campbell went the distance on a five-hitter as the Mountain Hawks opened the day with a 5-0 shutout of Sacred Heart. Senior Emily Bausher then followed with a four-hit gem in Lehigh's 4-0 win over Presbyterian.
Junior Jessica Calvini finished the day with a three run home run and four RBI while classmates Morgan Decker and Alexis Watanabe each added three hits for the Mountain Hawks, who improve to 5-1 on the season.
The Mountain Hawks did all of their damage against Sacred Heart (3-11) in a five-run third inning. Freshman Lindsay Phillips led off with a single and scored on a double to left by junior MacKenzie Velasquez. Two batters later Decker doubled to right to bring Velasquez home before Calvini capped the outburst with her three-run shot to left, Lehigh's first home run of the season.
Lehigh out-hit Sacred Heart 7-5 with Phillips and Watanabe recording two hits apiece.
Campbell picked up her sixth career shutout despite not recording a 1-2-3 inning until the seventh. She struck out eight and walked three to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Kacie Wentworth took the loss for the Pioneers, allowing five runs in 2.1 innings before Jamie Carlson came on to keep the Mountain Hawks at bay.
In its second game of the day, Lehigh scored single runs in four of the first five innings to beat Presbyterian (7-7). Bausher (3-0) allowed just four hits, striking out ten and walking none in her second consecutive shutout.
In the bottom of the first freshman Nicole Yozzo led off with an infield single and then stole second before scoring on a single up the middle by Decker.
Lehigh added to its lead in the third on a Watanabe single, a stolen base, and a RBI single by Calvini.
Bausher helped her own cause with a run-scoring single through the left side that scored freshman Katie Schultz in the fourth inning.
Decker led off the fifth with a double and came around to score when Calvini reached on an error while trying to sacrifice her to third.
The Mountain Hawks continue action at the Rebel Spring Games on Sunday with games against Florida A&M at 9 a.m. and Akron at 11:15 a.m.
