WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Lehigh softball team extended its winning streak to six straight with two more victories Sunday at the Rebel Spring Games. A six-run third inning powered the Mountain Hawks to a 9-1 six-inning win over Florida A&M in the opener, while in game two a RBI from junior MacKenzie Velasquez scored senior Emma Capetz in the bottom of the seventh to give Lehigh a 2-1 win over Akron.
Senior Emily Bausher and sophomore Christine Campbell combined to allow just two runs on seven hits for the Mountain Hawks, who improved to 7-1 on the season.
Lehigh recorded 11 hits against Florida A&M and benefitted from three Rattler errors to score eight two-out runs, all of which were unearned. Velasquez, junior Morgan Decker and freshman Carolyn Wright each had two hits in the opener.
The Mountain Hawks took the lead with two runs in the top of the third inning. Freshman Lindsay Phillips led off with a single and came around to score from third when Watanabe reached on an error. With Watanabe on second base, Decker singled to right, bringing Watanabe home to put Lehigh up 2-0.
Florida A&M answered with a run in the bottom of the third on a Miesha McBride RBI single but Lehigh took control of the game with six runs in the fourth.
Senior Cassie Waggy led off the fourth with her first home run of the season. With runners on the corners and two outs, Velasquez reached on an error, allowing Capetz to score from third. Watanabe then tripled to left field to up Lehigh's lead to 6-1 and Decker followed with her first home run of the season, a two-run shot to right, to extend the lead to 8-1. The home run was the 19th of Decker's career.
Lehigh added an ninth run in the sixth as Velasquez tripled with two outs and then scored when Watanabe reached on an error.
Campbell started and picked up her third win of the season, allowing a run on two hits in four innings, while walking two and striking out three. Sophomore Vicky Lattanzio closed out the win with two scoreless frames of relief.
In its second game of the day, Lehigh jumped out in front of Akron thanks to an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning. After an error prolonged the inning, Capetz singled home Waggy.
The lead was short-lived as Savannah Fruin led off the third with a home run off Campbell to tie the game at 1-1.
Lehigh had runners on second and third with one out in the fourth and loaded the bases in the fifth but failed to score as the Mountain Hawks and Zips continued to match zeroes into the seventh.
Capetz led off the seventh with a single and was sacrified to second by Phillips. A bunt single by freshman Nicole Yozzo put runners on the corners with one out. Velasquez then hit a ground ball to second base. Akron Caitlin Gambone attempted to tag Yozzo and throw on to first to complete the double play but she missed the tag on Yozzo, only recording the one out, as Capetz came on to score the winning run from third.
Campbell threw the first four innings against Akron allowing a run on three hits while striking out five and walking one. Bausher followed with three scoreless innings to earn her fourth win of the season. She allowed a hit and walked a batter while striking out four.
The Mountain Hawks will close out the Rebel Spring Games portion of their spring break trip with games against Niagara (10 a.m.) and Creighton (12:15 p.m.) on Monday.
