WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Sophomores Vicky Lattanzio and Christine Campbell combined on a five-hit shutout to lead the Lehigh softball team to a 1-0 victory over Niagara in its first game of the day Monday at the Rebel Spring Games. In their second game, the Mountain Hawks saw their seven game winning streak come to an end as Creighton scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to blank Lehigh 4-0.
With Monday's split, Lehigh finishes the Rebel Spring Games portion of its spring break trip with a 5-1 record and now stands at 8-2 overall.
Lehigh scored in the bottom of the first inning against Niagara, but was kept off the scoreboard in the next 13 innings spanning both games.
Freshman Nicole Yozzo led off the bottom of the first against the Purple Eagles with an infield single. She stole second and then moved to third on a ground out by classmate Rachel Timberman before scoring on a wild pitch.
Lattanzio and Campbell made the run stand to complete Lehigh's fourth shutout victory of the season. In her first career start in the pitcher's circle, Lattanzio pitched five scoreless frames allowing five hits while striking out two. She earned her first career victory. Campbell came on in the sixth and retired six of the seven batters she faced, with the only blemish being an error, to earn the save.
Lehigh had just three hits with Lattanzio and junior Alexis Watanabe recording the other two.
Sydney Smyers pitched well in a losing effort for Niagara (0-5), allowing just a run on three hits.
In the Mountain Hawks' second game of the day, senior Emily Bausher and Creighton's Micaela Whitney matched zeroes through five and a half innings.
Lehigh had two runners on with one out in the first but couldn't score and also put runners on base in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings without scoring.
Bausher started the game strong, retiring the first 12 Blue Jay batters before Blake Ringle led off the fifth with a single through the left side.
A leadoff walk to Tash Coffiel-Nelson in the bottom of the sixth was the start of Creighton's big inning. A sacrifice bunt moved Coffiel-Nelson into scoring position before Kelsey Allender's single through the right side brought home the game's first run. The run snapped Bausher's string of consecutive scoreless innings at 27. Following another Blue Jay base hit, Liz Dike gave Creighton some cushion with a three-run home run to left field.
Lattanzio singled to lead off the top of the seventh, but after a fly out was erased on a game-ending double play.
Bausher suffered her first loss of the season (4-1) allowing four runs on four hits. She struck out five and issued just the one costly walk.
Whitney earned the win for Creighton (7-4) scattering six hits and walking just one. Yozzo and Watanabe had two hits apiece to pace Lehigh against the Blue Jays.
The Mountain Hawks will have an off day Tuesday and will return to action with a pair of games at USF on Wednesday. Lehigh will face Georgetown at 2:30 p.m. and the host USF Bulls at 5 p.m. in Tampa, Fla.
