
Lehigh tops Georgetown 3-1 before falling 4-2 to USF Wednesday

TAMPA, Fla. – The second leg of the Lehigh softball team's spring break trip brought the Mountain Hawks to the USF Softball Stadium where they split a pair of games on Wednesday. Lehigh opened the day with a 3-1 win over Georgetown but the Mountain Hawks let a 2-1 lead get away against a strong USF team as the Bulls rallied to take their 12th straight game 4-2.
Wednesday's split leaves Lehigh at 9-3 overall and 6-2 on its spring break trip.
Sophomore Christine Campbell delivered a strong start for the Mountain Hawks against Georgetown (7-10), allowing one run on five hits in seven innings to earn the win and improve to 4-1 on the season. Campbell walked one and struck out two on the afternoon.
Lehigh took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning as a two-run double to right center by senior Emma Capetz scored sophomore Ashley Cole and junior Jessica Calvini. The Mountain Hawks added a run in the sixth as Calvini led off with a single and eventually came in to score on a two-out bunt single by freshman Nicole Yozzo.
Georgetown scored its only run in the bottom of the sixth as Samantha Giovanniello brought Gabriela Elvina home with a RBI single. Campbell limited the Hoyas to just the one run and worked around a two out single in the seventh to close out the victory.
The Mountain Hawks posted nine hits against Georgetown, with Calvini leading the way with three and Yozzo and junior Alexis Watanabe adding two apiece.
In its second game of the day, a two-run single from senior Cassie Waggy put the Mountain Hawks up 2-1 after five and a half innings. Senior Emily Bausher started in the circle and for her second straight start ran into trouble in the sixth inning. The Bulls put two runners on with two outs and Monica Santos' two-run double to right center gave USF a 3-2 lead. Astin Donovan added a single to cap the frame and Karla Claudio retired the Mountain Hawks in order in the seventh to help the Bulls improve to 20-7 on the season.
Claudio and Erica Nunn limited Lehigh to just five hits, with Bausher helping herself with two.
In the circle, Bausher allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits in six innings. She struck out five and walked four as she falls to 4-2.
Lehigh will close out its spring break trip with four games at the USF Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater. The Mountain Hawks will face Green Bay (9 a.m.) and Central Michigan (11:15 a.m.) on Friday before closing out the trip against Florida A&M (1:45 p.m.) and UMass-Lowell (6:30 p.m.) on Saturday.
