Mountain Hawks open USF Spring Break Tournament with two 3-2 victories

3/13/2015 1:52:00 PM | Softball

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Lehigh's final stop on its spring break trip features four games in two days at the USF Michele Smith Spring Break Tournament. The Mountain Hawks opened tournament play with a pair of 3-2 victories Friday as a sixth-inning home run by sophomore Vicky Lattanzio led Lehigh past Green Bay in the opener and the Brown and White built a 3-0 lead and held off a late Central Michigan charge to down the Chippewas in their second game of the day.

The Mountain Hawks totaled three home runs in the two games and improve to 11-3 on the season with the two victories.

Lehigh fell behind defending Horizon League champion Green Bay after giving up a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first inning. Junior Morgan Decker pulled the Mountain Hawks even in the third with her second home run of the season, a two-run shot to center field.

The game remained tied into the sixth when Lattanzio lifted her first home run of the season to left.

Green Bay (2-6) out-hit Lehigh 7-6 but left eight runners on base. Lehigh sophomore Christine Campbell closed the game with a scoreless seventh, working around two out walk to post her fifth victory of the season (5-1). Campbell allowed two unearned runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out two.

Briana Cavin took the loss for the Phoenix, allowing three runs on six hits in six innings.

Lattanzio led Lehigh at the plate going 2-for-2 with a walk against Green Bay.

In game two senior Emily Bausher matched zeroes with Central Michigan's Rachael Knapp through the first four innings. Lehigh took a 1-0 lead in the fifth as Bausher drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice, and then scored on a double to center by senior Emma Capetz.

Lehigh added another run in the sixth when Lattanzio led off with a single to right and scored three batters later when Bausher reached on a fielder's choice.

Capetz led off the top of the seventh with a solo home run to left, her first of the season and the third of her career.

Central Michigan refused to go quietly, however. An error, a strikeout and a double left runners on second and third for the Chippewas. Karly Hansen then delivered a pinch hit two RBI single to bring CMU within 3-2. A single and a walk loaded the based for Central Michigan, but Bausher got Trista Cox to line out to center, and freshman Katie Schultz atoned for her earlier error by throwing out the tying run at the plate to end the game.

Bausher picked up her fifth win of the season, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits. She walked three and struck out seven. Knapp allowed three runs on eight hits and took the loss for CMU (7-12).

Lehigh will play the final two games of its spring break trip on Saturday as the Mountain Hawks will face Florida A&M at 1:45 p.m. and UMass-Lowell at 6:30 p.m. from Clearwater, Fla.
