BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh men's lacrosse team looks to get back on track when the Mountain Hawks travel to Monmouth on Tuesday to face the Hawks. Opening faceoff is set for 3 p.m. and will air online via ESPN3. In addition, fans can listen to an audio broadcast on Lehighsports.com. Lehigh looks to snap a six-game losing streak and gain momentum heading into the final three Patriot League games, which are must-win contests as the Mountain Hawks hope for a late-season surge towards the league tournament.
Â
Saturday's 7-5 loss to Army dropped Lehigh's Patriot League record to 1-4, but the Mountain Hawks are still in the league tournament picture. The top six seeds make the postseason. Lehigh stands in eighth place, but faces two teams directly ahead in the standings over the next two Saturdays (Holy Cross and Colgate).
Â
The Mountain Hawks impressed defensively against Army Saturday, a team averaging 13.0 goals per game coming in. Junior defenseman Tripp Telesco shut down Army All-American John Glesener to just a goal and assist. In addition, Glesener had just four shots (one on goal) after averaging nine shots per game over his first eight contests. Telesco tallied a season-high five groundballs and three caused turnovers. Sophomore Ian Strain scooped a career-high (and game-high) seven groundballs to go with a caused turnover while senior Sam Lawrence tallied a pair of caused turnovers. The defense held Army scoreless for long stretches of 14:21, 13:30 and 14:11 on Saturday.
Â
Senior Kurtis Kaunas scored two of Lehigh's five goals while junior Alex Eaton and seniors Dan Taylor and Patrick Corbett each had a single goal. Junior Reid Weber dished a pair of assists and scooped five groundballs. Freshman Adam Sawicki started his second straight game in goal, making eight saves including five in the second half to allow his offense to pull close. Army scored a man-up goal with 14:11 remaining to take a 7-3 lead, but Lehigh quickly answered with two goals over the next 4:05. The Mountain Hawks had several chances down the stretch to pull closer, including a pair of point-blank chances from Corbett which Army goalie Sam Somers stopped.
Â
Saturday's game continued a string of close Lehigh-Army games. The last three contests have been decided by two goals or less. The last Lehigh-Army game in Bethlehem (2012) was a slim 7-6 Mountain Hawks' victory. Last season's regular season game at Army was a 6-5 Black Knights' win.
Â
Monmouth is 4-3 early in the season, enjoying mixed results. The Hawks have only scored five goals per game, but own wins over Rutgers (10-9), Wagner (7-3), NJIT (6-3) and Siena (5-4). Monmouth's defense has only allowed six goals per contest. Bryce Wasserman leads the team in scoring with 12 points (nine goals, three assists) while Tyler Keen (seven goals) and Chris Daly (three goals, four assists) each have seven. Ryan Horsch leads the team in groundballs with 21 while Garrett Conaway has impressed between the pipes. He's tallied a 6.03 GAA and .647 save percentage. Monmouth has struggled at the faceoff X, winning just 35 percent (35-of-100) as a team. The Hawks are riding two straight victories, including a 5-4 win over defending MAAC Champion Siena on Saturday. That gave Monmouth its first-ever MAAC victory.
Â
Lehigh won the first-ever meeting last season, outscoring Monmouth 3-1 in the third and fourth quarters to turn a slim 7-5 halftime lead into a 13-7 victory. Weber scored a career-high four goals while Corbett also added a hat trick.
Â
The Mountain Hawks return to league play when they travel to Holy Cross on Saturday. Opening faceoff is set for 3 p.m.
