BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team will see its first local action Tuesday when the Mountain Hawks head to Delaware for a 3 p.m. midweek matchup. Remnants of winter weather and unplayable field conditions have forced the postponement of Lehigh's home opener that was originally scheduled for Wednesday against Muhlenberg. The Mountain Hawks' Sunday home doubleheader against Fairleigh Dickinson will now be played at FDU.
The Mountain Hawks look to bounce back from a 1-7 Spring Break trip last week when the Mountain Hawks head to Delaware Wednesday. Lehigh picked up a 9-2 victory over Saint Joseph's in its first game of the Snowbird Classic before falling to Saint Bonaventure, Georgetown, Western Michigan and Seton Hall. Lehigh is 3-9 on the young season.
Junior Mike Garzillo and senior Justin Pacchioli have led Lehigh offensively with respective batting averages of .438 and .415. Garzillo has knocked in a team-best 12 RBI while Pacchioli leads the squad with 13 runs scored and eight stolen bases. Junior Anthony Rinaldi follows with a .278 batting average and ten RBI.
Freshman Peter Moore will be the starting pitcher for Tuesday's game. It will be the third start of the season for the rookie who holds a 1.00 ERA through nine innings pitched. His last action came against St. Bonaventure on March 10 when he threw six one-run innings and struck out five batters while giving up just three hits.
The Blue Hens carry a 6-4 record into Tuesday's game and are coming off a 2-0 weekend with wins against Sacred Heart (9-0) and the host Rams (7-3). Delaware is 2-1 at home this season. Joe Giacchino leads the team with a .349 batting average and is followed by Tyler Powell with a mark of .314. Giacchino and Ty Warrington are tied for the team lead in RBI (5), while Giacchino and Powell have both scored a team-best six runs.
Matt Hornich will get the start on the mound for the Blue Hens Tuesday. Hornich will be making his second appearance of the season after throwing four scoreless innings against Rider on March 10. He held the Broncs to four hits while fanning three in four complete frames.
With the postponement of Wednesday's home opener, Lehigh's next action will be at Fairleigh Dickinson this weekend for a four-game series beginning with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
