Lehigh heads to Yale for Giegengack Invitational this weekend

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's and women's track and field teams will look to continue their recent success when the Mountain Hawks travel to Yale for the Giegengack Invitational Friday and Saturday. The meet will be Lehigh's second to last tune-up before Patriot League Championships which loom just two weeks away. Action begins at 5 p.m. Friday and continues at 10 a.m. Saturday from Coxe Cage.
The Lehigh men's squad has had a strong start to its 2014-15 campaign including impressive performances last weekend. The Mountain Hawks recorded two IC4A-qualifying marks at the Armory, while earning four first-place finishes at the Covert Classic. At the Armory Invite, senior Ryan Mahalsky ran the 5,000 meter race in an IC4A-qualifying time of 14:28.91 that was good for fourth place and senior Adeolu Adesida turned out another IC4A-qualifying high jump with a 2.04 meter leap. At the Covert Classic, the Mountain Hawks took the top three spots in the triple jump including junior Cody Israel in first with a 14.16 meter leap. Senior Derek Gaul won the long jump with a leap of 7.00 meters while freshman James Chappell earned the 1,000 meter run title with a time of 2:38.76.
On the women's side, junior Elizabeth Weiler set a new Lehigh record in the 5,000 meter race to highlight the weekend at the Armory Invitational. Sophomore Courtney Avery tied her own school record in the high jump at the Covert Classic with a leap of 1.75 meters, setting a new facility record for Rauch Fieldhouse. Weiler and Avery's efforts earned them each a Patriot League weekly award.
Following this weekend's trip to Yale, Lehigh returns to action for its final meet before Patriot League Championships next weekend at the Bucknell Tune-up.
