NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Elizabeth Weiler set another school record to highlight the Lehigh women's track and field team's impressive showing at Yale's Giegengack Invitational this weekend. The successful team effort in Lehigh's penultimate meet before Patriot League Championships included a pair of ECAC-qualifying marks and several new personal-best times.
"This meet was all about working on seed times and having others vie for positions on the team that will go to the Patriot League Championships," said coach Debbie Utesch. "We saw some really good stuff in come out of those two things we were looking for. There was growth in speed and endurance and people are starting to position themselves well for the league championship meet."
Weiler set a new Lehigh record for the second consecutive weekend, this time in the 3,000 meter run, after crossing the finish line in an ECAC-qualifying time of 9:45.18 and earning first place. Weiler's mark bests the previous school record of 9:49.36 that was set in 2012 by Savanna Plombon.
"Biz is really just starting her training cycle, so she has a ton of potential to continue breaking records as the season goes on," said Utesch. "She ran most of the race by herself and had to focus on lapping people to keep her rhythm and take down the record."
Sophomore Courtney Avery continued her impressive season with a first-place finish in the high jump after recorded an ECAC-qualifying leap of 1.74 meters. Senior Jonelle Jerwick placed second in the pole vault with a mark of 3.45 meters.
Sophomore Katie Hatler turned out another personal-best time in the 60 meter hurdles after racing to the finish line in a time of 8.92 seconds. The pace earned her third place.
Senior Victoria Mullane (2:57.18) and freshman Tyler Scanlin (2:59.14) earned third and fourth place, respectively, in the 1,000 meter run. The duo of senior Ingrid Simon (5:04.15) and freshman Laura Barnes (5:10.70) took fourth and fifth place in the mile run, respectively, while freshman Hannah Leskow (5:11.36) followed closely behind in seventh place. Senior Halie Carter (58.43) and sophomore Soraya Theard (59.22) finished in fifth and sixth place in the 400 meter dash. Senior Shannon Wright picked up fourth place in the 5,000 meter run with a clip of 17.56.20.
The Mountain Hawks return to action next weekend at the Bucknell Tune-Up in the team's final action before Patriot League Championships take place Feb. 20-22 at Navy.
