Lehigh welcomes Navy for Wednesday showdown

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Lehigh women's basketball team looks to snap a seven game losing streak to the Mids when the Mountain Hawks host Navy in a big Patriot League matchup Wednesday night in Stabler Arena. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and free t-shirts will be given to the first 100 students in attendance. Lehigh has won four straight home games and will be looking to build upon the momentum of a 71-58 victory over Holy Cross on Saturday. The Mountain Hawks got out to a quick 12-0 lead and were able to hold off several Holy Cross rallies en route to the victory. Senior Katie O'Reilly led Lehigh offensively with 15 points and scored her 1,000th career tally to become Lehigh's 17th 1,000 point scorer.
 
In addition to O'Reilly's 15 points, the senior also contributed five assists, three steals and a pair of rebounds. Junior Kerry Kinek followed with 14 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two blocks. Sophomore Lexi Martins recorded her 16th double-double of the season with 11 points and ten rebounds.
 
Lehigh finished the game shooting 40.9 percent (27-for-66) from the field 35.7 percent (5-for-14) from three-point range and 60 percent (12-for-20) from the charity stripe. The Mountain Hawks held Holy Cross to a 40 percent (24-for-60) percent clip from the field and 21.1 percent (4-for-19) mark from downtown. Lehigh held a 43-35 rebound advantage and scored 25 points off of the Crusaders' 23 turnovers.
 
The Mountain Hawks currently hold down third place in the Patriot League with a 9-5 league record. Navy sits one game behind with a record of 8-6. Lehigh heads into Wednesday's game leading the league in scoring offense with an average of 74.1 points per game, while the Mids have the second-best scoring defense in the league, holding opponents to just 55.6 points per game.
 
Navy snapped a two-game losing streak with a 64-52 victory over Colgate in the Mids' most recent game Saturday. Navy made 12 three-pointers, including five from senior Chloe Stapleton, to help down the Raiders. Stapleton and freshman Taylor Dunham both tallied a team-best 15 points, while sophomore Sarita Condie chipped in 13 points. Freshman Haley Unger pulled down a team-best eight rebounds to go along with her eight points.
 
The balanced-scoring Navy squad is led by Dunham who averages nine points per game. Stapleton (7.7), Condie (7.0) and freshman Sarah Reilly (6.1) follow close behind.
 
The Mids have the second-best scoring defense in the Patriot League, holding their opponents to an average of 55.6 points per game. Navy tops the league statistical charts in field goal percentage defense, limiting their opponents to just 26.5 percent from beyond the arc. The Mids lead the league with 7.4 three-pointers per contest and also collect a league-best mark of 9.6 steals per game.
 
The Mountain Hawks will be looking to snap a seven-game losing streak to the Mids and avenge a tight 47-44 loss in the first meeting of the season on Jan. 21 in Annapolis, Md.
 
Despite holding its opponent to a season-low 47 points, Lehigh struggled to get anything going offensively and lost a tight 47-44 battle. The Mountain Hawks trailed by seven with just over eight minutes to play before coming back to take a one-point lead with 1:30 on the clock, but Navy's Hannah Fenske scored the final five points of the game to help the Mids to the victory.
 
Martins tallied her 12th double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Kinek followed closely behind with nine points, 11 rebounds and a season-best six assists. O'Reilly chipped in nine points and freshman Quinci Mann contributed eight. Lehigh finished the game shooting 31 percent (18-for-58) from the field and 25 percent (5-for-20) from three-point range. The Mountain Hawks held Navy to a 27.7 percent (18-for-65) clip from the field, but the Mids shot 7-for-16 (43.8 percent) from downtown. Navy held a 48-44 rebound advantage and scored 20 points off of 13 Lehigh turnovers.
 
Following Wednesday's game, the Mountain Hawks head to Easton to face archrival Lafayette Saturday at 2 p.m. Free video will be available on the Patriot League Network.
