WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - The Lehigh rowing team returned to action for its final regatta of the fall on Saturday, enjoying success at the Frostbite Regatta. Two crews won two gold medals while several others finished near the top of their races. The Frostbite Regatta was 2,000 meters long, much like the racing in the spring.
Â
"Today was exactly what we needed to jump start our winter training," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "We had some boats be very successful in bringing home some gold medals and we had some boats that weren't near the top, so we know we have some physical fitness to catch up with."
Â
Lehigh's Women's Freshmen Four finished first in its flight, coming in 7:58.84, more than 20 seconds ahead of second-place Saint Joseph's. The Women's Freshmen Eight also won its flight, posting a time of 7:22.57.
Â
"I'm incredibly proud of the freshmen women," said Conley. "They jumpstarted the day. The Men's Freshmen Four, coming in the top two at the end of the fall, shows they're learning at a high rate, which is exactly what we need."
Â
The Men's Freshmen Four placed second (7:44.98) while the Mountain Hawks finished third in the Men's Varsity Four (6:52.95), just over three seconds behind the first-place finisher. Lehigh also finished near the top of the Women's Varsity Eight, coming in 7:09.49.
Â
"We had a lot of people doubling up in races," said Conley. "Learning how to be mentally tough was also very important for us today."
Â
With Saturday's regatta, Lehigh wraps up its fall season and will look ahead to the upcoming spring campaign.
Â
"We spent a lot of the fall focusing on the technical aspects of rowing," said Conley. "Now, as we move into the winter, the level of fitness needs to increase. That's where we'll put our effort, along with continuing to fine tune the technical aspect."
