Mountain Hawks impress in spring opener against Loyola

PHILADELPHIA - The Lehigh rowing team impressed in its spring debut on Saturday, winning four of the six races against Patriot League opponent Loyola. The racing took place on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The effort was led by the Women's Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight, who each won their races by healthy margins.

"I think we had a great effort and we raced the way we wanted to race, which was fantastic," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "We raced with power and a lot of poise, which allowed us to get the results we expected and have a successful day."

The Women's Varsity Eight finished with a time of 7:33.7, nearly a minute ahead of Loyola in second (8:26.94). The Second Varsity Eight finished in 7:58.7, well ahead of the Greyhounds (9:20.20). Lehigh's B boat led the way in the Varsity Four (8:30.05).

"The Women's Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight set an enormous tone of what they wanted to do," said Conley. "At no point during the race were they ever content. Being aggressive from start to finish showed we have something to work with this year.

On the men's side, Lehigh's A boat won the Varsity Four, finishing in 7:25.6. In the Men's Varsity Eight, Lehigh finished less than one second behind Loyola, coming in 6:41.94 compared to the Greyhounds' 6:41.16.

"I think today allowed us to really understand how each race needs to be treated like a championship race," said Conley. "We definitely went out with the mentality of how we wanted to attack the day. It was great to see us racing with a championship caliber effort."

The Mountain Hawks will return to the Schuylkill River next Saturday (Mar. 19) when the women's squad faces Temple and the men row against Delaware.
