BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Two weeks after kicking off the 2015-16 season, the Lehigh men's and women's swimming and diving teams are set to return to the pool this weekend for a pair of road meets. The Mountain Hawks will stay in state to take on West Chester and Bloomsburg in a tri-meet Friday evening on the West Chester campus, before traveling to New Jersey for a Saturday matinee against Rider.
In the October 10 season opener against Boston University, Lehigh broke a pair of Jacobs Pool records and earned 10 victories in races as part of a pair of losses. Junior Kaitlyn Ruffing earned a pair of wins in the freestyle sprints, including a pool record time of 51.32 in the 100 free, in addition to two second-place finishes on the 200 medley and 400 free relay teams. Sophomore Sydney Bornstein earned a win in the 200 fly, and freshmen Kate Bergin (200 back) and Courtney Ferreira (200 free) each tabbed second place finishes.
On the men's side, junior Jacob Moyar won the 1,000 yard freestyle and set a new pool record of 1:49.25 in the 200 yard butterfly. Freshman Jason Ewart captured the 100 yard backstroke title in his collegiate debut, and Justin White added two wins in the 100 and 200 freestyles, while Jamal Willis earned a win in the 50 free sprint.
West Chester's men's and women's programs are both off to 2-1 starts this year, coming off 100+ point blowout wins over fellow D-II schools Shippensburg and Southern Connecticut State, and losses to Oklahoma Baptist. For Bloomsburg, the meet will be their season opener.
Rider enters Saturday with both programs coming off victories over Fairfield last Friday. The women suffered a loss in their Oct. 10 season opener against UMBC, while the men came away with a 157-141 win.
"Right now on the men's and women's sides we have people that are swimming really well and we want to continue that," said head coach Rob Herb. "The league has posted some good times and we are in the top of the league and we want to stay that way. We're keeping very competitive at practice so that our hand speeds are up for racing and that we're in the right mindset."
Lehigh has had split results against West Chester and Rider each of the last two seasons, with the women winning meets against both schools, and the men dropping close decisions to both. The women will be seeking their third win in a row over Rider and West Chester after lopsided victories last season, while the men will look to top WCU and Rider for the first time since the 2011-12 season.
Friday's tri-meet in West Chester is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start, ahead of Saturday's dual at Rider, which is slated for 1 p.m.
