Mountain Hawks earn seventh-straight victory over archrival Lafayette

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's track and field team earned victories in nine of 17 events to edge out Lafayette 96-85 Saturday inside Rauch Fieldhouse in the annual Lehigh-Lafayette indoor dual meet. The Mountain Hawks picked up their seventh-straight indoor dual meet victory over the Leopards with the win.
"We've been training really hard and I was super happy to see the kids come out here and give it all they had today," said head coach Matt Utesch. "This meet gave us some of the marks that we'll use to seed at the Patriot League Championships. They really did a great job and got it done today."
The Mountain Hawks took the top two spots in the high jump, led once again by sophomore Courtney Avery who turned out an ECAC-qualifying mark of 1.70 meters. Junior Gabrielle Wardle finished second with a leap of 1.65 meters. Freshman Amanda Youngblood picked up her first collegiate win in the weight throw with a heave of 13.44 meters, edging the second-place finisher of Lafayette by nearly a meter. Senior Jonelle Jerwick earned the pole vault title with a 3.35 meter launch.
Sophomore Katie Hatler got Lehigh started on the track with a victory in the 60 meter hurdles after sprinting to the finish line in an impressive 9.04 seconds.
Lehigh swept the top three spots in the 1000 meter run, led by senior Ingrid Simon in first place with a time of 3:02.10. Classmate Victoria Mullane (3:06.70) and junior Ann O'Connell (3:08.20) were right behind in second and third, respectively. The Mountain Hawks continued their dominance in the 3,000 meter race as senior Shannon Wright crossed the finish line in 10:27.13 to claim first place. Junior Elizabeth Weiler (10:33.99) and sophomore Ashley Strysko (10:59.92) took second and third in the event to complete the podium sweep.
Weiler claimed the mile run title with a time of 5:09.76, while Mullane followed in second place with a clip of 5:13.05. Freshman Tyler Scanlin finished atop the podium in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:19.45 and was followed by sophomore Marissa Karl (2:20.96) in second place.
The quartet of Mulane, Karl, Scanlin and Simon outkicked Lafayette in the 4x800 meter relay to cross the finish line in first place with a time of 9:44.28 and secure the Lehigh victory.
The Mountain Hawks will split their squad next weekend between the Armory Invitational in New York City and the John Covert Classic inside Rauch Fieldhouse.
