BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's and women's track and field teams look to build upon early-season success as the Mountain Hawks resume action this weekend with the 23rd annual John Covert Classic inside Rauch Fieldhouse and the Armory Track Invitational in New York City. Select Mountain Hawks will head to the Armory Invitational, one of the nation's largest indoor track meets, that is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday and continue through Saturday, while other Lehigh student-athletes will remain home to compete in the Covert Classic beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Both teams are coming off impressive wins over rival Lafayette in the annual Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet last weekend. The men's team won 15 of 17 events to roll to a dominant 120-61 victory over the Leopards, while four Mountain Hawks recorded IC4A-qualifying marks. Sophomore Lucas Warning smashed the IC4A-qualifying shot put mark of 15.70 meters with an impressive 16.24 meter toss to earn first place before being named Patriot League Field Athlete of the Meet for his efforts. Senior Benjamin Beauchamp claimed first place in the weight throw with an IC4A-qualifying heave of 17.06 meters. Senior Adeolu Adesida won the high jump once again with an IC4A-qualifying jump of 2.10 meters. Senior Derek Gaul registered an IC4A-qualifying long jump with a leap of 7.02 meters that was good for second place and just a centimeter behind the first-place finisher of Lafayette.
The Mountain Hawk men impressed at last year's Covert Classic with seven first-place finishes, and turned out four IC4A-qualifying marks and a new school record at last season's Armory Invite.
The women were able to edge out their crosstown rivals 96-85 thanks to nine event victories as the Mountain Hawks picked up their seventh-straight indoor dual meet title over the Leopards. Sophomore Courtney Avery turned out another ECAC-qualifying high jump with a leap of 1.70 meters to earn first place, while other event victors included freshman Amanda Youngblood, sophomore Katie Hatler, senior Ingrid Simon, senior Shannon Wright, junior Elizabeth Weiler, senior Jonelle Jerwick, freshman Tyler Scanlin and Lehigh's 4x800 meter relay team.
Five Lehigh women earned even victories at last season's Covert Classic. Four new school records were set at the 2014 Armory Invite in addition to multiple ECAC-qualifying marks.
Following the busy weekend, Lehigh returns to action on Feb. 6-7 at Yale's Giegengack Invitational.
