BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a weekend off from competition, No. 11 Lehigh returns home to host Franklin & Marshall and No. 6 Cornell in the first two duals of a five match home stand. In their last dual action, the Mountain Hawks enjoyed a successful trip to Maryland winning 17 of 20 bouts in convincing dual victories over Navy and Maryland. Senior Santiago Martinez had a strong showing in his move up to 174, with wins by fall in both duals. Last weekend Martinez added a first place finish at the Shorty Hitchcock Memorial Classic. Lehigh will face Franklin and Marshall for the first time since 2009 on Saturday before the eight-time defending EIWA champion Big Red visits Sunday in the annual Billy Sheridan Memorial Dual.
Â
The two fifth-year seniors in Lehigh's lineup, Martinez and Marshall Peppelman, switched spots for Lehigh's dual wins at Navy and Maryland. In the fall semester, Martinez competed at 165 and Peppelman at 174. Both men competed at 165 at the Southern Scuffle with Peppelman defeating Martinez on the way to a sixth place finish. The move up to a new weight class hasn't seemed to bother Martinez, who won both his matches at 174 by fall and then went on to win the Shorty Hitchcock Classic. The former NCWA national champion at UCF has won six of his last seven bouts, with three of those victories coming via fall.
Â
When Lehigh meets Cornell on Sunday, Peppelman will wrestle against the team he was a member of from 2010-2014. Peppelman went 56-34 for the Big Red and represented Cornell at the 2012 and 2013 EIWA tournaments. He qualified for NCAAs with a fourth place finish at 165 in 2012 and took seventh in the EIWA at 174 in 2013. Peppelman is expected to face Cornell's Dylan Palacio, who edged Peppelman by a 6-5 score in the second round of the Southern Scuffle earlier this month.
Â
Franklin & Marshall carries a 2-4 dual record into Saturday's match with Lehigh. The Diplomats have also been busy, competing in a number of open tournaments, including the David Lehman F&M Open which they hosted on January 3. Last weekend F&M hosted the Diplomat Duals, defeating Shippensburg, before falling to Shorter. Within the EIWA, F&M has defeated Sacred Heart, but lost at Army in November. The Diplomats' top wrestler, All-American Richard Durso has only been competing in open tournaments this season. Patrick Quinlan leads those listed as probable starters with a 19-8 record at 133. Mike Rogers is in his fifth season as F&M's head coach.
Â
Cornell hosts EIWA rival Penn on Saturday before making the trek to Bethlehem to face Lehigh on Sunday. The Big Red are 8-1 in duals and opened Ivy League and EIWA dual competition with road wins at Harvard and Brown last weekend. Cornell finished fifth at the Las Vegas Invitational and edged Lehigh by half a point for sixth place at the Southern Scuffle. The Big Red's lone dual loss was a 27-9 home setback to Missouri on January 10. Cornell's probable lineup features seven wrestlers listed in the latest InterMat rankings. Leading the way is Gabe Dean, who is ranked No. 1 at 184. Returning NCAA finalist Nahshon Garrett is ranked third at 125 but did not compete last weekend in New England. Dean and Garrett are two of Cornell's returning EIWA Champions from a year ago with Chris Villalonga (149) and Jace Bennett (197) the others. Cornell has won the last eight EIWA Tournament team titles. Rob Koll is in his 21st season as Cornell's head coach.
Â
Lehigh is facing F&M for the first time since 2009 with the last meeting before that coming in December 2000. Lehigh has won seven straight versus the Diplomats since F&M posted its only win in the series in 1987. Cornell is Lehigh's third most often wrestled opponent behind Penn State and Navy. Lehigh is 1-3-1 versus the Big Red under Pat Santoro.
Â
Saturday's match versus F&M is set for a 2 p.m. start from Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall, while Sunday's match with Cornell will get underway at 3 p.m. Tickets for both duals can be purchased at LehighTickets.com, by calling 610-7LU-GAME during normal business hours, or at Grace Hall on match day.
