
Lehigh heads to Navy Wednesday for key Patriot League battle

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Lehigh women's basketball team heads to Navy Wednesday for a big Patriot League battle as the Mountain Hawks and Mids square off for sole possession of second place in the league standings. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. from Navy's Alumni Hall and free video will be available on the Patriot League Network as well as audio coverage on WLVR-FM (91.3) beginning at 6:45.

The Mountain Hawks are coming off a 66-60 road victory at Holy Cross Saturday in Lehigh's most recent action. The Mountain Hawks trailed by nine with 15:44 to play, but came back to pick up the important victory. Lehigh held Holy Cross to just two points in the final three minutes and converted 9-of-10 attempts from the charity stripe to seal the road victory.

Senior Katie O'Reilly led the team with a career-high 22 points to go along with eight rebounds and three steals. Sophomore Lexi Martins tallied her 11th double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while freshman Quinci Mann followed with seven points.

The Mountain Hawks shot 33.9 percent (20-for-59) from the field, 16.7 percent (3-for-18) from three-point range and 59 percent (23-for-59) from the free throw line. Holy Cross went 32.2 percent (19-for-59) from the field, 25 percent (3-for-12) from downtown and 79.2 percent (19-for-24) from the charity stripe. Lehigh held a 47-38 rebound advantage.

Lehigh currently leads the league in scoring offense (73.7 ppg) and field goal percentage (45.6 percent). Martins leads the team with 15.6 points per game and a league-leading 11.3 rebounds per contest. O'Reilly has averaged a team-best 16.7 points per game since Patriot League play began on Dec. 31. Junior Kerry Kinek has also been a major contributor, averaging 12.8 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.

The Mids carry a 10-7 overall record and 4-2 Patriot League mark into Wednesday's contest. Navy has won four of its last five contests, including a 65-63 decision at Colgate in its most recent action Saturday.

Freshman Hannah Fenske rolled in a layup as the final horn sounded to give Navy the win at Cotterell Court. Freshman Taylor Dunham led the team with 18 points, and was followed by Fenske and senior Chloe Stapleton with nine points. Dunham connected on four-of-six field goal attempts -- two-of-three from three-point range -- to score 12 second half points and 18 for the game. She also added two assists and accounted for four steals.

Navy shot 52.2 percent from the floor in the second half, which was helped by a four-of-six showing from three-point range. That led to the Mids shooting 45.1 percent from the field for the game. Colgate also shot the ball well after halftime -- 45.5 percent -- on its way to putting together a 39.7-percent shooting effort for the game.

Navy's defense ranks high amongst the Patriot League leaderboards as the Mids are second in scoring defense (56.9) and field goal percentage defense (36.4) and first in three-point field goal percentage defense (25.5) and steals (10.2). The Mids also lead the league in three-point field goals made with an average of 7.8 per contest.

The Mountain Hawks will be looking to snap a four-game losing streak to the Mids and even the all-time series between the two squads Wednesday.

Navy has won the last six meetings, including all three matchups last season which ended with the Mids claiming an 84-54 victory over Lehigh in the Patriot League Quarterfinals on March 6, 2014. Katie O'Reilly scored a team-high ten points to lead the Mountain Hawks, followed by Lexi Martins with nine. Elizabeth Sharlow pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.

Lehigh was limited to just 34.5 percent (20-for-58) from the floor and shot 2-for-14 from three-point range. The Mountain Hawks held a 37-35 rebound advantage, but turned the ball over 18 times compared to Navy's nine.

The Mids shot an impressive 51.7 percent (31-for-60) from the field and a blistering 60 percent (12-for-20) from downtown en route to the victory. Four Mids scored in double-digits, led by Kara Pollinger with 17 points.

Lehigh returns home Sunday to host archrival Lafayette inside Stabler Arena at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast by American Sports Network.
