BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball senior Justin Pacchioli has been named the projected Patriot League Player of the Year by Collegiate Baseball in its 2015 college preview issue. Senior John Elson and juniors Kevin Long and Mike Garzillo were named other top players to watch as the Mountain Hawks were predicted to finish second in the Patriot League by the publication.
Pacchioli has led Lehigh and the Patriot League in batting average for the last two seasons and was named first team All-Patriot League following the 2014 campaign. The Easton, Pa. native hit .362 last season, including a .382 mark in league play, and earned a spot on the All-Patriot League Tournament team after helping Lehigh to the Patriot League Championship series at Bucknell. Pacchioli finished the season with 16 stolen bases and a .445 on-base percentage. He recorded 11 multiple hit games, including five three-hit contests.
Garzillo joined Pacchioli as a first team All-League selection a season ago after leading Lehigh in hits (56), extra-base hits (15), RBI (33), slugging percentage (.407) and walks (20). Elson ranked second on the team in runs scored (29), RBI (25) and stolen bases (11) and recorded 12 multiple hit games and seven multiple RBI games throughout the season while hitting .286 in Patriot League play. Long served as a key weekend piece on the mound last season and posted four wins, two saves and a 3.21 ERA in 15 appearances.
The Mountain Hawks capped off a historic 2014 season with their first Patriot League Championship series appearance since 2006 as Lehigh finished the season with a 25-24 overall record that included a 10-10 Patriot League mark and multiple marquee wins. The successful 2014 campaign included the team's lowest ERA in 35 years and a league-leading batting average.
Lehigh is set to open preseason practice within the coming weeks and will open the 2015 season on Friday February 20 at Davidson.
