BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Facing an 0-2 start for the first time since 2009, Lehigh hopes the third time is a charm as the Mountain Hawks meet Yale Saturday afternoon at the Yale Bowl. Despite scoring 27 second half points, the Mountain Hawks were unable to overcome a 29-point, 401-yard first half by No. 7/9 New Hampshire last week as the Wildcats prevailed 45-27. Sophomore Brandon Yosha rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown, while freshman Troy Pelletier caught a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to lead the Lehigh effort.

Yale opens its season on Saturday. The Bulldogs went 5-5 a year ago and finished fourth in the Ivy League with a 3-4 league mark. Yale was picked fifth in the Ivy League preseason poll and returns seven All-Ivy performers from 2013.

Wide receiver Deon Randall is Yale's captain and sole returning first team All-Ivy selection. He caught 78 passes for 788 yards and eight touchdowns last year. Another player to watch is running back Tyler Varga who earned honorable mention All-Ivy last year after earning first team honors in 2012. Varga missed four games but still averaged over 100 rushing yards per game. Clemson transfer Morgan Roberts served as the backup quarterback last year and could get first crack at the starting job. All-Ivy linebacker William Vaughn is the Bulldogs' top returning tackler, with 82 stops. Yale went 1-1 versus the Patriot League last year, winning its opener at Colgate before losing at home to Fordham.

The Mountain Hawks' running game has been bolstered by the addition of Yosha, who transferred to Lehigh from the University of Miami last winter. A former standout at Cathedral High School in Indiana, Yosha appeared in six games on special teams for the Hurricanes as a true freshman in 2012. He rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown in his Lehigh debut against James Madison and added 108 yards and a score last week at UNH.

The only New Hampshire native on Lehigh's roster, Pelletier was a bright spot for the Mountain Hawks in his return to his home state. Pelletier caught three fourth quarter passes against UNH, good for 30 yards and a pair of touchdowns. A regular on special teams through Lehigh's first two games, Pelletier became Lehigh's first freshman wideout to score a touchdown since Derek Knott in 2012 and the first freshman to score two touchdowns in a season since James Flynn had two in 2009. Pelletier's 18 yard touchdown pass from Matt McHale with 1:52 to play marked Lehigh's longest pass play of the day.

Lehigh and Yale have met 21 previous times with the Bulldogs leading the series 15-6. This series has been highlighted by streaks, as Yale won the first 12 meetings and then the Mountain Hawks won the next five. Yale won three straight before Lehigh claimed the most recent meeting in 2011. The Mountain Hawks are visiting the historic Yale Bowl for the first time since 2007.

Yale's home stadium, the Yale Bowl, celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2014. At the time of its opening for the 1914 Harvard-Yale game it was the largest athletic venue in the world. Lehigh first played at the Yale Bowl in 1915 and holds a 2-7 record in the venerable venue, with wins in 1994 and 2004.

In recognition of competition between Lehigh University (founded 1865) and Yale University (founded 1701), the lifetime achievements of their graduates, and the generations of families that have attended both universities, the Yank Townsend Trophy is presented to the winner of the Lehigh - Yale football game.  Charles Frederick Townsend was the only student from Connecticut to enter the Lehigh Class of 1895, earning the nickname "Yank" He graduated with a bachelor of science degree in architecture and engineering, operated his own firm, Norton & Townsend from 1911-1960, and designed a number of bank buildings and colonial residences.  Yank Townsend (1873-1963) was a devotee of Lehigh and Yale athletics, and today a trophy bearing his name is presented to the winner for the fifth time. Yale initially won the trophy in 2006 and successfully retained it twice, before Lehigh captured the trophy for the first time in 2011.
