Mountain Hawks drop 14-9 final at Boston U in Patriot League Quarterfinals

4/22/2014 6:41:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

BOSTON  - Third-seeded Boston University jumped out to an early lead and #6 Lehigh could never recover as the Terriers advanced to the Patriot League Semifinals with a 14-9 win on Tuesday.  Junior Kelsey Yenco led Lehigh's offense with her first-career hat trick while junior Carli Sukonik and freshmen Lauren Beausoleil and Allison LaBeau each had a goal and assist.

"We are disappointed for our season to come to an end today," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "We are proud of the progress we made this season, but unfortunately, we did not execute well enough to win today."

Boston University jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead before Yenco got the Mountain Hawks on the board at 19:53 of the first half. The Terriers responded to take a 3-1 lead, but senior Chelsea Retaleato and Sukonik scored to even the score at three at the 11:01 mark.

Boston University answered with three in a row to take a 6-3 advantage, but the Mountain Hawks came back with two of the final three first-half goals as a freshman Julianne D'Orazio scored to make it 7-5 with 25 seconds left in the half.

The Terriers scored the first three second-half goals to take a 10-5 lead. Lehigh scored three of the next four goals as a Krista Dampman tally pulled the Mountain Hawks within 11-8 with 10:35 left in the second.

Boston University scored the next two goals, however, to take 13-8 lead at 8:46 of the second half. Beausoleil scored with 42 seconds remaining, but it wasn't nearly enough.

D'Orazio added three caused turnovers while Beausoleil had two as well.

The Terriers held a 27-23 lead in shots and 17-14 edge in draw controls while the Mountain Hawks had a 16-13 advantage in groundballs. Senior goalie Alexandra Fitzpatrick made nine saves across Boston University's Christina Sheridan who made seven.

The Mountain Hawks end their season with a 7-9 record, advancing to their first Patriot League Tournament since 2011. Included was a big double overtime win at Boston University earlier this month, handing the Terriers their first-ever Patriot League loss. Lehigh featured the Patriot League Rookie of the Year (LaBeau) and five All-Patriot League honorees.
