BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off another 10+ win regular season, the #18 Lehigh men's lacrosse team begins its quest for a third straight Patriot League Championship when it welcomes Navy to the Ulrich Sports Complex for the quarterfinals on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The winner will advance to the league semifinals on Friday hosted by overall #1 seed Loyola. If the Mountain Hawks win, they would face second-seeded Army on Friday night while if Navy wins, it would play the host Greyhounds (since the brackets reseed).
Tickets to Tuesday's game are just 10 dollars (and five dollars for Lehigh students, and any other student of any age, and children). Tickets are available online by clicking here, or at the Ulrich Sports Complex beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Two-time defending champion Lehigh enters the postseason winners of two straight and five of its last six games. The only loss was a heartbreaking 10-9 double overtime defeat to Princeton on Apr. 8. The Mountain Hawks topped Lafayette 17-6 in the regular season finale on Friday, using an 11-0 run to turn a 5-3 second-quarter lead into a dominating 16-3 third-quarter advantage. Junior Dan Taylor scored six straight goals during that run as he finished the game with a career-high seven goals and nine points. He has posted 33 points over his last five games and leads the Patriot League with 61 points on the season behind 39 goals and 22 assists.
Sophomore Reid Weber scored three goals in the game's first 16:36 for his third-career hat trick. Junior Kurtis Kaunas tied a career high with two goals for a second straight game while sophomore Billy Oppenheimer tallied a goal and assist. Up big late in the third quarter, head coach Kevin Cassese cleared his bench as 40 players saw action including the first action of the season for senior Bryson Craft and first-career action for freshmen goalies Donny Stires and Garrett Miers. Sophomore Steve Brodeur also played as Lehigh's four goalies all made at least one save on the evening. Senior Matt Poillon started and made six stops (allowing just four goals) in the first 44:15.
Four different Mountain Hawks - senior Ty Souders, senior Jimmy Cahill, junior Sam Lawrence and sophomore Tripp Telesco - posted two caused turnovers to help lead another strong defensive effort. Telesco owns 37 caused turnovers on the season, standing sixth nationally in caused turnovers per game. The defense allowed seven goals or fewer for the seventh time in the last eight games. The Mountain Hawks held Lafayette scoreless for a stretch of 26:07 allowing the Lehigh offense to score its 11 straight goals.
Lehigh picked up an impressive 13-2 victory over Navy in March and has won four straight against the Midshipmen overall. Lehigh's first two-ever Patriot League Tournament games came against Navy, both losses. If the Mountain Hawks want to win their third straight Patriot League Title, they will need to win three games in six days beginning Tuesday. Lehigh is vying to become the first team since Navy to win three straight championships. The Mids won four in a row from 2004-07.
Navy is in the midst of an up-and-down season, but the Mids have qualified for their first Patriot League Tournament since 2010. The Midshipmen are coming off a strong effort against #5 Johns Hopkins, falling 6-5. Navy is 4-8 overall and 3-5 in the Patriot League, defeating Holy Cross, Lafayette and Boston University. The Mids are 3-4 at home compared to 1-4 on the road. Sam Jones leads the team in scoring with 38 points (21 goals, 17 assists). T.J. Hanzsche (21 goals, two assists), Tucker Hull (18 goals, five assists) and Gabe Voumard (15 goals, eight assists) each have 23 points as well. Pat Kiernan leads the team with 19 caused turnovers to go with 39 groundballs while Brady Dove has impressed at the faceoff X, winning 57.8 percent (145-of-251) with 74 groundballs. John Connors has impressed in goal, owning an 8.90 GA and 53.7 save percentage.
Lehigh has won the last four meetings to pull within 29-5 in the all-time series. The Mountain Hawks ended a 98-year drought with a 14-10 win in 2011 before winning on the road in 2012 (9-4) and at home last season (12-7). Navy won the first meeting in 1910 (4-2) and won three straight before Lehigh's first win in 1913 (4-3). From there, the Mids won 26 straight, but the Mountain Hawks have responded the last four seasons.
With a win, the third-seeded Mountain Hawks would advance to the Patriot League Semifinals to face #2 Army on Friday at 7:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network. The semifinals and championship game will take place at regular season champion Loyola.
