Lehigh heads to Coppin State, hosts Seton Hall in midweek action

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team looks to bounce back from a tough weekend at Navy when the Mountain Hawks travel to Coppin State Tuesday at 3 p.m. before hosting Seton Hall Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. on the Goodman Campus Baseball Field. The two contests will serve as Lehigh's final non-league tilts of the season as the Mountain Hawks prepare to wrap up the regular season and make a run for a postseason berth this weekend against Lafayette.

Lehigh aims to snap a five-game losing streak when the Mountain Hawks head to Coppin State Tuesday. Lehigh dropped four at Navy over the weekend as the Mids used strong pitching to limit the Mountain Hawk offense and secure the series sweep. Despite the losses, Lehigh sits in fourth place in the Patriot League standings and remains in contention for a spot in the Patriot League Tournament. The Mountain Hawks will be in control of their own destiny when Lafayette visits the Goodman Campus Baseball Field this weekend as Lehigh sits at 7-8 with a 2.5-game lead on Lafayette (4-10) and 3.5-game lead on Holy Cross (3-11).

The Mountain Hawks are hitting .274 as a team, led by junior Justin Pacchioli's .329 batting average. Senior Joe Abeln (.308) and sophomore Mike Garzillo (.307) are both batting over .300 while Abeln leads the team in runs scored (24) and Garzillo leads the squad in RBI (24). Lehigh has tallied a team ERA of 4.36, compared to its opponents 4.31, throughout the season thus far. The Mountain Hawks expect to throw a number of pitchers in the two midweek contests.

Coppin State looks to build upon a 3-0 series finale victory over Norfolk State that halted an eight-game losing streak Sunday. The Eagles carry a 9-25 record into Tuesday's showdown, seven of those wins coming in league play. The Eagles are hitting .222 as a team, led by Randal Mendez' .289 batting average. Jack Kraft has batted in a team-best 19 runs. Coppin State holds a 6.83 ERA compared to its opponents' mark of 2.61.

Lehigh swept a doubleheader at Coppin State on March 10 with 9-3 and 8-2 wins. Abeln batted in three runs in Lehigh's two wins while going 4-for-7 at the plate. Freshman Jacen Nalesnik went 4-for-8 while also recording three RBI. Starting pitchers Nick Stephens and Colin Gotzon picked up the wins, while Kevin Long and Nick Cassell recorded the saves.

Seton Hall sits at 27-8 overall and will play Monmouth Tuesday before heading to Bethlehem Wednesday. The Pirates have won six of their last seven games, including a 9-3 win in their most recent contest Saturday at Georgetown. Seton Hall is hitting .314 as a team, compared to their opponents' average of .232. D.J. Ruhlman leads the team with a .382 batting average, while Sal Annunziata leads the team in runs scored (27) and RBI (32). The Pirates are strong on the mound, as well, posting a team ERA of 3.12 compared to their opponents' ERA of 6.13.

Lehigh and Seton Hall were scheduled to meet early this season, but the contest was postponed due to inclement weather. The Pirates won the last meeting 17-7 on April 24, 2013 in South Orange, N.J.

Following the midweek contests, Lehigh will host archrival Lafayette on the Goodman Campus Baseball Field Saturday and Sunday. Doubleheaders will be played both days with first pitches set for 12 p.m.
