BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team will take to the Goodman Campus Baseball Field for the first time in over two weeks as the Mountain Hawks welcome Holy Cross for an important four-game Patriot League series. A pair of doubleheaders will be played Saturday and Sunday with first pitch slated for 12 p.m. both days. A free live audio broadcast will be available for all four games via Lehighsports.com.
This weekend's series should help separate the middle of the pack in the Patriot League as Lehigh currently sits in fourth place with a 3-4 league record that is part of a 13-14 overall mark. The Crusaders are right ahead of the Mountain Hawks in the league standings with a 3-3 record, but hold a 10-19 overall record. Neither team was able to play all four games in their league opening series due to weather. Lehigh and Army were able to get in three games while Holy Cross and Lafayette played two.
The Mountain Hawks will look to build upon back-to-back wins as Lehigh bested Temple 3-2 in 10 innings on Wednesday and took the series finale at Bucknell Sunday by a score of 4-2. The Bison won the first three games of last weekend's series, but Lehigh was able to hand Bucknell its first league loss of the season thanks to strong pitching from sophomore Kevin Long and senior Nick Cassell. A strong legion of Lehigh arms kept Temple scoreless for the final nine innings of Wednesday's game as the Mountain Hawks were able to tie the contest at two in the ninth to force extra innings before scoring the winning run in the tenth.
Lehigh is hitting .274 as a team, led by junior Justin Pacchioli's .333 batting average. Classmate Tim McKay (.321) and senior Joe Abeln (.309) are the two other Mountain Hawks hitting above .300. Abeln and junior John Elson have scored a team-high 18 runs, while sophomore Mike Garzillo leads the squad with 19 RBI. Five other Mountain Hawks have batted in double-digit runs so far this season.
Seniors Colin Gotzon (2-1, 5.68 ERA) and Mike Burke (1-2, 4.45 ERA) will start on the mound in Saturday's two contests, while Sunday's starting pitchers will be Long (3-1, 2.17 ERA) and junior Nick Stephens (2-3, 4.62 ERA). Long picked up Lehigh's lone win last weekend at Bucknell as the sophomore owns the team's lowest ERA. Senior Joey McNamara leads the Mountain Hawks' bullpen with a 3.10 ERA, while Cassell has been a strong closer for Lehigh with three saves and a 4-2 record.
The Crusaders dropped a pair of midweek games to Central Connecticut State (6-4) and Dartmouth (8-7) after splitting their first full Patriot League series at Navy last weekend. Holy Cross picked up 6-1 and 6-3 wins in the first and last games of the series, while the Mids took the middle two contests 13-2 and 3-1.
The Crusaders are hitting .263 as a team, led by Jack St. Clair's .360 batting average and 20 RBI. Anthony Critelli is hitting .337 and Evan Ocello follows at .336 with a team-best 25 runs scored. Ocello has also stolen 18 bases in his 20 attempts this season.
Ben White (0-2, 3.37 ERA) and Phil Reese (2-2, 4.60) will be the starting pitchers for Saturday's doubleheader, while Donny Murray (2-3, 6.07) and Nate Walker (2-2, 4.94) will toe the rubber Sunday. Out of the bullpen, Jeremy Perron has made nine appearances and holds a 2.57 ERA and Sean Gustin has tallied a 3.48 ERA in his 12 appearances. Jon Escobar leads the team with three saves.
Following this weekend's series, the Mountain Hawks will remain home to host UMES in a non-league doubleheader Tuesday beginning at 12 p.m. before hitting the road once again to face Navy next weekend.
