BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh rowing team will compete in the Murphy Cup on Saturday before traveling to New Rochelle, N.Y. on Sunday to face Iona, Robert Morris and Marist. The Murphy Cup is set for the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.
"This weekend is one of our toughest weekends on our schedule with the potential of racing as many as four times," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "We go into to a major regatta with heats and finals then compete in two dual races in New York against crews that have not raced on Saturday. We did this on purpose because we are looking for our crews to be tougher and rise above obstacles. They have done a great job all year dealing with the weather frustrations that we've faced and this will be one more hurdle we will have to overcome."
The Mountain Hawks opened the spring last weekend with mixed results. The women faced Drexel, Temple and Delaware while the men faced Delaware. The Men's Varsity Eight and Men's Freshmen Four each won their races while the Women's Varsity Eight finished in second place ahead of Temple and Drexel before its disqualification.
"We will be racing some of the same teams as last weekend, but the difference is this will prepare us for how to race in a big regatta," said Conley. "The racing that happens on Sunday is very similar to last weekend. We will race two other teams on Sunday morning (Iona and Robert Morris) and then we will have a second race in the early afternoon against Marist (and possibly Robert Morris again). The dual races that we have adjusted to have really helped us understand racing better."
The Mountain Hawks impressed in last year's Murphy Cup as the Women's Freshmen Four and Freshmen Eight each won gold medals while the Men's Varsity Four and Freshmen Eight advanced to the finals as well.
"The team is excited about this coming weekend," said Conley. "They know and feel we have made improvements from last weekend and I am curious to see what kind of speed we can show as a full team against some very fast teams."
Following this weekend, Lehigh will host archrival Lafayette in the River Cup next Saturday (Apr. 5).
