BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following a tough 6-5 loss at Army Saturday, the Lehigh men's lacrosse returns home for its final three home games of the regular season beginning with a midweek matchup with Monmouth. Opening faceoff on Wednesday is set for 7 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex following the Lehigh women's game vs. Cal at 4 p.m. The Mountain Hawks will remain home for a Saturday showdown with Holy Cross then face Colgate next Saturday (Apr. 5) in Goodman Stadium.
Junior Dan Taylor led the offense on Saturday with three goals, all in the first half. He's posted a hat trick in three of the last four games as he's jumped to a team-leading 25 points (17 goals, eight assists). Sophomore Alex Eaton scored the only third-quarter goal for either side, but the Black Knights scored the only three fourth-quarter goals to escape with the 6-5 win.
The Lehigh defense continued to impress, allowing six or fewer goals for the sixth time in nine games this season. The Mountain Hawks have allowed just 11 goals over their last three Patriot League games (three at Bucknell, two vs. Navy and six at Army). Out of those 11 goals, only eight have been even strength as Lehigh has given up an average of just 2.67 even strength goals over that span. Junior Dylan O'Shaughnessy led the defense on Saturday, finishing with a career-high four caused turnovers. Senior Ty Souders posted a team-high three groundballs while adding a caused turnover. Junior Matt Poillon was strong in goal, finishing with nine saves. Army scored all six of its goals in two outbursts that equaled 9:13 - one of 3:14 in the second quarter and another 5:59 stretch in the fourth. Lehigh held Army scoreless for the first 21:04 then 21:49 bridging the second and fourth quarters.
The Mountain Hawks have moved to #2 nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 6.67 goals per game. Sophomore Tripp Telesco leads the team with 17 caused turnovers and owns 23 groundballs, most among close defensemen. O'Shaughnessy is now up to 17 groundballs and 14 caused turnovers. Two-time All-American Souders has 21 groundballs as an anchor of the defense.
Junior Kurtis Kaunas scored Lehigh's other goal on Saturday while sophomore Reid Weber added an assist. The Mountain Hawks had beaten Army three straight times before Saturday's loss. Lehigh hasn't played at home against Army since the 2012 regular season.
Monmouth comes in 0-7, but has been competitive in several games this season. The Hawks' first-ever game was a slim 10-8 loss to UMBC while Monmouth has lost two other one-goal games and a two-goal final. Monmouth also hung tough in a 12-7 loss to nationally-ranked Bryant. Dan Bloodgood leads the team in scoring with 11 points via eight goals and three assists. Chris Daly has nine (five goals, four assists) and Zach Johannes seven (five goals, two assists). Three others have six points apiece. Ryan Horsch leads the team in groundballs (18) and caused turnovers (12). Duncan Campbell and Marco Mosleh have taken most of the faceoffs as Monmouth struggles at the faceoff X, winning just 22.9 percent. Nick Hreshko and Garrett Conaway have split time in goal. Together, they have a strong 59.0 save percentage.
Wednesday marks the first-ever meeting against Monmouth.
The Mountain Hawks will remain home for a Patriot League matchup against Holy Cross on Saturday at 2 p.m.
