Balanced effort leads Lehigh past Monmouth, 13-7

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Five Mountain Hawks finished with multiple points, freshman Casey McAdam won 17-of-23 faceoffs and sophomore Tripp Telesco led the defense with five groundballs and five caused turnovers as the Lehigh men's lacrosse team topped Monmouth 13-7 on a chilly Wednesday evening at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Sophomore Reid Weber led the offense with a career-high four goals and five points while junior Patrick Corbett posted his eighth-career hat trick as the Mountain Hawks improve to 7-3 on the season.

"I am proud of the way the guys finished tonight," said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. "We've been struggling in the fourth quarter a little bit and our stats will show that. I was happy to be able to win the fourth quarter, and the third quarter as well. It was a good second half for us."

Lehigh extended a 7-5 halftime lead to 10-6 after three quarters and 13-7 at the final horn.

"The guys played with good energy," said Cassese. "I thought Monmouth played with good energy as well. It was a pretty evenly-matched game in the first half, but our guys rose to the occasion. I think some of our experience came to the forefront. It's good to get the win."

Sophomore Alex Eaton set a career high with four points (two goals, two assists) while junior Alan Henderson had a career-high two goals and assist. Junior Dan Taylor scored a goal and added two assists.

McAdam was dominant at the faceoff X, going a perfect 10-of-10 in the second half to help Lehigh pull away. He finished the evening with 12 groundballs.

"I'm really proud of Casey," said Cassese. "He had a tough go against Army on Saturday and I know that's been eating at him. To go back with him and have him with this output tonight is great for a young guy, to get rid of that taste. He did a great job, not only winning the draw, but also creating some offense and unsettled situations. I am proud of his effort. Our faceoff unit in general was great today."

Along with Telesco's big night, senior Ty Souders had four groundballs and a caused turnover as Lehigh's starting close defense collected 11 groundballs and six caused turnovers on the evening.

Taylor got the scoring started at 13:19 of the first quarter off a feed from Eaton. Weber scored his first of the day just 1:30 later, but Monmouth responded with two straight goals to pull even. Two goals in a 28-second span, from junior Kurtis Kaunas and another from Weber, made it 4-2 after one quarter.

Monmouth pulled within 4-3 less than a minute into the second quarter, but goals from Weber and Henderson made it 6-3. However, Monmouth answered with two of the final three first-half goals to pull within 7-5 after 30 minutes of play.

Lehigh came out of halftime with a vengeance, scoring the first two in the first 2:29 to take a 9-5 lead. Monmouth answered, but the Mountain Hawks erased any doubt by scoring three straight bridging the third and fourth quarters to take a 12-6 lead. Monmouth scored at 6:22 of the fourth, but Weber scored his fourth goal of the game in transition off a feed from Telesco (his first-career point) for the 13-7 final.

The Mountain Hawks held a 43-22 lead in both shots and groundballs. Sophomore Steve Brodeur made six saves in goal while a pair of Monmouth goalies combined for 13 stops. Monmouth was 3-of-5 on the extra man while Lehigh was 1-for-1.

The Mountain Hawks will remain home for a Patriot League matchup against Holy Cross on Saturday at 2 p.m. That game will be broadcast locally on Service Electric 2 Sports, and streamed online through the Patriot League Network.
