Mountain Hawks fall 6-2 to Mercer in Citrus Classic finale

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Lehigh softball team was unable to recover from a shaky third inning against Mercer Sunday as the Mountain Hawks fell to the Bears 6-2 in their final game of the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The Mountain Hawks finished the three-day tournament at 0-4.
Despite letting up four earned runs, junior Emily Bausher was strong in the pitcher's circle, striking out six batters in six innings.
Bausher breezed through the first two innings without letting up a hit, but Mercer's Kaitlyn Haney hit a one-out two-run RBI double in the bottom of the third to put the Bears in front. Later in the inning, a Lehigh error led to two more unearned runs, making the score 4-0 going into the fourth.
Mercer added two more hits and earned another run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-0 lead going into the fifth inning.
The Mountain Hawks finally got onto the board in the top of the sixth inning on a two-out RBI single by freshman Ashley Cole that scored sophomore Jessica Calvini.
Mercer added another run in the bottom of the sixth before Lehigh freshman Vicky Lattanzio hit a two-out RBI triple in the top of the seventh to bring in Bausher, who was hit by a pitch, for Lehigh's final run of the game.
The Mountain Hawks finished the game with ten hits, including two apiece for sophomores Alexis Watanabe, Morgan Decker and Carissa Zito, but left runners left on base.
Mercer was led by Haney, who was 2-for-3 with three RBI, and Taylor Miller, who went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
Lehigh will look to bounce back next weekend when the Mountain Hawks head to California for the first time since 1998 in Lehigh's annual spring break trip. Lehigh will begin the week in California with four games in two days at the San Diego Classic. The Mountain Hawks will face Utah State and Illinois-Chicago Saturday at the University of San Diego before moving to San Diego State on Sunday to battle Utah and Colorado State.
