Lehigh drops rain-shortened 4-1 decision to Colorado State in California

IMPERIAL, Calif. – The Lehigh softball team simply can't catch a break. The Mountain Hawks flew all the way to San Diego to be met with rain and game cancellations. In an attempt to get games in on Saturday, Lehigh traveled to Imperial, California to battle Colorado State and Illinois-Chicago. Once again, the weather interfered. Lehigh fell 4-1 to Colorado State Saturday at Imperial Valley Community College in a game that was shortened to five innings due to rain. The Mountain Hawks' game against the Flames was rained out.
With the hard-luck, rain-shortened loss, Lehigh falls to 0-5 on the season. Colorado State improves to 8-3.
Both teams recorded six hits but Chelsea O'Connor's fourth inning grand slam proved to be too much for the Mountain Hawks.
Sophomore MacKenzie Velasquez led Lehigh going 3-for-3 and driving in Lehigh's only run with a two-out RBI single to left that scored junior Cassie Waggy in the top of the fifth inning. Lehigh proceeded to load the bases with the tying runs but Holly Reinke got junior Emily Bausher to ground out to first to end the threat.
The Rams had two runners on base with two outs in the bottom of the fifth before the game was called due to rain.
Bausher started in the circle for Lehigh and gave up four hits in three innings including the grand slam by O'Connor. She struck out two and walked two as she falls to 0-3 on the season. Senior Ashley Quigley pitched the final 1.2 innings before play was halted.
Reinke earned the rain-shortened win, allowing a run on six hits in five innings with a walk and three strikeouts.
The Mountain Hawks will try again for their first win of the season on Sunday when they return to San Diego to face Fresno State at 12:30 p.m. (PT) and the host Aztecs at 3 p.m. (PT).
