BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's track and field team will head to Lewisburg, Pa. this weekend to compete in the three-day Patriot League Championship meet inside Bucknell's Gerhard Field House. The action begins Friday at 12 p.m. and will continue through Sunday afternoon as the Mountain Hawks will be searching for their first-ever Patriot League Championship.
"Our top kids are still going to be top kids in the league," said head coach Matt Utesch. "We're going to count on points from them, but we also have a great freshmen class that will help us. I think we'll have a lot of points coming out of the multi events, which will be a great start for us."
The Mountain Hawk women scored 106.33 team points last year en route to a third place finish at the championship meet as Utesch was named Coach of the Year. Brooke Astor garnered Field Athlete of the Meet recognition following her first-place finish in the pentathlon. Bucknell claimed the team crown with 162 points.
The women have set a total of eight new Lehigh records this season. Freshman Courtney Avery has impressed in her first collegiate season, setting two new school records in the high jump and earning a record-tying three Patriot League Rookie of the Week awards. Senior Brooke Astor set new standards in the 60 meter dash and hurdles and was named Patriot League Field Athlete of the Week following her season-opening pentathlon win.
Senior Danielle Albergo sprinted 400 meters in 57.60 to set a new Lehigh-best, while classmate Jessica Kendzor recorded a new standard in the 500 meter dash. The quartet of Albergo, Kendzor, freshman Lindsay Voltz and junior Halie Carter also set a new record in the 4x400 meter relay.
Astor has turned out the Patriot League's top marks in the 60 meter hurdles, long jump and pentathlon. Avery owns the league's best high jump mark this season, while Lehigh's distance medley relay team has also claimed the top league spot.
"Going into Patriots, I'm just excited to be able to show the league what we can do," said Astor. "Hopefully we can make a lot of noise and put up some great marks."
The women were predicted to finish fourth in this year's preseason poll, while Bucknell was projected to stand atop the podium.
This weekend's championship meet will be Lehigh's second-straight meet at Bucknell as the Mountain Hawks competed in the Bucknell Tune-Up last weekend. The unscored meet gave Lehigh the opportunity to preview its Patriot League Championship track.
First team All-Patriot League status goes to the winners of each event, while second-place finishers comprise the second-team All-League squads. Head coaches will vote following the conclusion of the championship on Male and Female Track Athlete, Field Athlete, Rookie and Coach of the Year honors.
After Sunday, those that have qualified from the Mountain Hawks' squad will compete at the ECAC Championships in Boston for a chance to advance to the NCAA Indoor Championships. The ECACs will be held March 7-9.
