Mountain Hawk seniors reflect on their careers
2/20/2014 10:24:00 AM | Women's Basketball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's basketball senior class of three has certainly made its mark on the program, both on and off the court. The three seniors took a moment to reflect upon their careers in preparation for Senior Night on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against archrival Lafayette.
#11 Alexandra Yantzi
Yantzi has been a key contributor in the Mountain Hawk defense for all four of her years at Lehigh. She has tallied an impressive 51 blocks thus far in her career, including 25 this season alone. Earlier this season, Yantzi recorded a career-high seven blocks against archrival Lafayette. An English and French double major, Yantzi has tallied a 3.00 GPA throughout her time at Lehigh and is working towards her master's degree in secondary education.
What's your favorite Lehigh Basketball memory up until this point?
AY: There are too many. It has been a blessing to meet all my teammates, from the seniors my freshmen year, to the freshmen my senior year. They all have made my Lehigh basketball experience fun, crazy, and unforgettable. All the buzzer beaters, after game locker room celebratory dances, practices, laughs and smiles have created one great everlasting memory that I am forever thankful for.
Describe the relationship with your fellow seniors.
AY: I love these girls. From the beginning, we've always fit together. We come from different places, we have different views, likes and dreams, but that's what makes me love us as a group. I'm so excited to see where we all end up in the next couple of years. Lindsay and Hil have worked hard on and off the court during their four years and I'm so proud of them. We're all going to do great things. Lehigh has prepared us well. I'm sure when we're all 60 years old, we'll still be calling each other, checking up and reminiscing.
Describe the feeling going into Senior Night. What are some of the thoughts going through your mind as you're nearing the end of your collegiate career?
AY: What a ride. It's quite the combination of emotions. It's a little scary to think that the next chapter of my life won't be centered around basketball. Basketball has been a huge part of all of our lives, and soon, it won't be one of our main priorities. I'll always love basketball. Lehigh has challenged me, tested me. It has been frustrating and rewarding. It had made me reflect and question what I want to do and who I will be. I have yet to figure out all these questions, and I'm happy I can continue to answer them for the rest of my life. All I do know is that I'm going to miss my team and the feeling of tying up my shoes every day to go battle out on the court. I'm so thankful for all the people that helped me reach this point in my life, and although my competitive basketball life may be over, I'm excited to help others realize their dreams too.
What will you miss most about Lehigh Basketball?
AY: My team, my sisters, my girls. The coaches have always done an amazing job of putting together amazing teams of unique and amazing girls, and I'm happy to say I have had the opportunity to find a whole group of sisters that I love. I will miss battling with them on the court and working together to try and achieve our goals. Luckily, I can still keep in touch with everyone.
What are your postgraduate plans?
AY: Next year, I will stay at Lehigh a fifth year to complete my masters in Secondary Education, with a specialization in English. I will be a gryphon next year on campus, too. I plan to continue to try to make Lehigh's campus an even better place than it already is, to have fun being creative with my writing and music, and to continue to have fun with new and long-time friends. I also am excited to spend more time with my family. I love them so much. After that, who knows! I would love to teach, and maybe become a principal, and maybe even a director of an education board one day. I would also love to coach.
#13 Hilary Weaver
A Millersburg, Ohio native, Weaver saw action right from the start of her time in Bethlehem. She played in 32 games during her freshman campaign as a key reserve and took over the starting job during her sophomore season, starting all 29 games. Weaver led the Mountain Hawks in assists during her junior campaign. While her senior season started late due to injury, Weaver has proved to be a leader on and off the court. The design arts major and mass communications minor has tallied an impressive 3.53 GPA throughout her time at Lehigh and has been active in the community, participating in Lehigh's SALSC (Student Athletes Leading Social Change) and Leadership Legacies program.
What's your favorite Lehigh Basketball memory up until this point?
HW: My favorite Lehigh basketball memory is having the opportunity to travel to San Francisco for Kelly Peterson's homecoming game. Not only was it a great experience playing Cal, but the Peterson family welcomed us into their home and we spent the day touring the city.
Describe the relationship with your fellow seniors.
HW: The relationship you build with your classmates over four years is unlike anything I have experienced. Linds and X have been there for me through every part of college and I'm so thankful that I could share my experience with them. Since we are all a ways from home, we had to lean on each other through any adversity we faced, and I feel this is what made us become so close. I know that it goes without saying that we would do anything for each other and that we created lifetime friendship in our years at Lehigh.
Describe the feeling going into Senior Night. What are some of the thoughts going through your mind as you're nearing the end of your collegiate career?
HW: Senior night is definitely going to be bittersweet. I think it's hard to predict the emotions I will feel ahead of time. I am just glad that I will get to share with experience with my family because I know my basketball career has been as much a part of their lives as it has been mine. My parents have travelled across the country to watch me play and support me and I am thankful that we will have senior night to reflect and celebrate the memories we've created.
What will you miss most about Lehigh Basketball?
HW: I will miss my teammates the most. You take for granted getting to spend 3-4 hours with them every day, and soon that will no longer be the case. I know that I could have never made it through these four years without them, and at the end of the day, they're really what have kept me involved in the game.
What are your postgraduate plans?
HW: After graduation I will be moving to Phoenix, Ariz. to be a member of Teach for America. Next fall, I will be teaching secondary mathematics.
#15 Lindsay Hoskins
Hoskins saw playing time right from the start of her career as a Mountain Hawk and took over as a starter during her junior campaign. That season, Hoskins had a team-best shooting percentage and the most offensive rebounds of any Mountain Hawk. She has been a key all-around athlete, consistently putting up both offensive and defensive numbers. Hoskins, a journalism major and political science minor, has tallied an impressive 3.54 GPA.
What's your favorite Lehigh Basketball memory up until this point?
LH: My favorite memory by far was the trip to Ohio State. I loved going back home and playing in front of my family and friends one last time. The trip from my hometown to Lehigh is about 9 hours, so it was awesome to play so close to home and against Ohio State. I have been an Ohio State fan since I was a little girl so it was a surreal experience.
Describe the relationship with your fellow seniors.
LH: Hilary and X are my best friends. I cannot imagine doing this without them. They are the best teammates, housemates and friends I could ask for. I think we are a great trio because we balance each other out so well. X is easily the most giving, caring person I have ever met. She would give you the clothes off her back if you needed them. Hilary has always been there for me no matter what. We have been close since day one and looking back at all we have been through, I don't know if I could have made it with anyone else.
Describe the feeling going into Senior Night. What are some of the thoughts going through your mind as you're nearing the end of your collegiate career?
LH: Going into senior night, I can't believe it has come so fast. I feel bittersweet about the night. I am so happy to end my career with this team and against Lafayette, but at the same time I am so sad it all is ending. I love playing at Stabler in front of our fans and parent and it will be hard to become a fan in the stands and not a player on the court. I think the only thing that will keep me even keeled on senior night is the fact that we are not done. We hope to be playing a lot more games after that.
What will you miss most about Lehigh Basketball?
LH: I will miss my team more than anything. In this season, there are some really hard times people go through on and off the court and my teammates have been there for me every time. The times I have had with these girls have honestly been the best of my life. I will miss all the road trips and nights in the hotels and conditioning in the post season. All the little things I will miss the most. Not seeing them every day really is going to get hard to get used to.
What are your postgraduate plans?
LH: After graduation I am hoping to get a job in news casting. I am currently job searching. I don't know where I will end up, but I am really up for any adventure that heads my way.
