Mountain Hawks travel to first-place Navy Wednesday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Lehigh women's basketball team looks to make a statement Wednesday night when the Mountain Hawks travel to Annapolis to face first-place Navy at 7 p.m. Lehigh aims to snap a two-game losing streak and hand Navy just its third league loss of the season. The game will be broadcast live on the Patriot League Network and fans can listen on 91.3 WLVR-FM in the Lehigh Valley or wlvr.org.

The Mountain Hawks fell 76-68 at Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon in their most recent contest. It was a one-point game at halftime, but the Crusaders shot 68 percent (17-for-25) from the field in the second-half to push past Lehigh.

Sophomore Elizabeth Sharlow led Lehigh with a career high-tying 15 points and nine rebounds. Classmate Kerry Kinek followed with 13 tallies and eight boards, while juniors Sarah Williams (11) and Katie O'Reilly (10) also finished in double figures.

Raquel Scott led four Crusaders in double digits with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Brisje Malone followed with 16 points.

Lehigh finished the game shooting 37.1 percent (26-for-70) from the field and 46.2 percent (6-for-13) from three-point range. Holy Cross finished 51.8 percent (29-for-56) from the field and 27.3 percent (3-for-11) from downtown. The teams both finished with 39 rebounds, while Holy Cross recorded ten blocks compared to Lehigh's two.

Navy carries a 12-2 league record and 20-5 overall mark into Wednesday evening's contest. The Mids only two league losses came at the hands of Army and Lafayette.

Navy handily defeated Colgate 76-47 in its most recent game on Saturday afternoon in Hamilton, N.Y. The Mids strung together a 31-4 run that spanned the end of the first half and the start of the second half, which allowed Navy to pull away from last-place Colgate. The win gave Navy its 20th victory of the season, which marks the third 20-win campaign by the Mids in the last four years and just the fifth in school history.

Alix Membrano led the Navy attack with 18 points, while Jade Geif and Kara Pollinger each chipped in 15. Geif and Membrano also notched double-doubles with their 10 rebounds apeice. Pollinger tallied a team-best five assists.

Each of Navy's five starters average at least 8.9 points per game, with Pollinger's 14.7 average leading the way. The highest point per game average from a non-starter is M.L. Morrison's 4.6 mark.

Navy averages a league-leading 9.1 three-pointers per game, as Pollinger leads with a league-best 2.9 per contest. The Mids also lead the league in defensive rebounds (28.6) and assist to turnover ratio (1.3). Navy's +9.8 scoring margin ranks second, as does its field goal percentage (42.6) and field goal percentage defense (36.8).

Although Lehigh holds a one game all-time advantage over the Mids, Navy has won the past four meetings between the two squads. The Mids took the first meeting of the season 73-61 in Bethlehem on Jan. 22.

The three-time defending Patriot League champion Mids shot 47.8 percent (11-for-23) from three-point range, compared to Lehigh's 5.6 percentage (1-for-18) to cruise to their eighth straight win.

O'Reilly led the Mountain Hawks with a career-high 19 points, while Williams tallied 11. Kinek was held to seven points, bringing her 19 game double-digit scoring streak to a halt, but recorded a team-leading nine rebounds. Williams led the team with five steals, while sophomore Amina Affini snatched three steals. Five Midshipmen scored in double-digits, led by Membrano with 18 and Pollilnger with 16.

Following Wednesday's matchup, Lehigh will return home for three straight games in Stabler Arena. The Mountain Hawks host archrival Lafayette Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. on Senior Night.
