NEW YORK – In its final competition of 2014, No. 11 Lehigh split a pair of duals at the third annual Grapple at the Garden Sunday at Madison Square Garden. The Mountain Hawks opened the day with a 23-10 win over Princeton but then lost their second dual of the day 19-18 to No. 12 Edinboro on criteria. Sophomore Mitch Minotti returned from injury to go 2-0 in his season debut while junior Nathaniel Brown and sophomore Doug Vollaro also went 2-0 to pace the Mountain Hawks' effort.

Lehigh enters a short holiday break at 7-3. The Mountain Hawks' last two losses have come via criteria as the Fighting Scots prevailed on the first criteria with a 6-4 edge in matches won.

In its first dual of the day the Mountain Hawks won seven of ten bouts against the Tigers. Lehigh raced to an early 11-0 lead behind wins by decision from freshman Scott Parker at 125 and sophomore Randy Cruz at 141 as well as the first bonus point win of the season for junior All-American Mason Beckman at 133. Beckman dominated Christian Innarella in a 22-7 technical fall that was secured in 6:20.

Princeton posted its first victory at 149 as Adam Krop won an 11-3 major decision over sophomore Will Switzer.

Minotti then made his season-debut a victorious one, beating Francesco Fabozzi 4-0 in his first match up at 157. An All-American last year at 149, Minotti scored a first period takedown and escaped in the second before riding out the third period.

After Princeton won at 165, senior Marshall Peppelman and Brown extended Lehigh's lead to 20-7 with back to back wins by decision.

In the only matchup of nationally ranked wrestlers, Princeton's Abe Ayala edged sophomore Elliot Riddick 5-4 in the tiebreakers at 197. Both wrestlers scored a takedown in regulation, with Riddick scoring in the second and Ayala answering in the third. After a scoreless sudden victory period, Ayala rode out the first half of the tiebreaker. Riddick conceded the escape to start the second half neutral but could not convert on a low single shot.

Vollaro closed out the Princeton dual with a 4-2 sudden victory win over Ray O'Donnell.

In the nightcap, Lehigh used a pair of pins to battle back from deficits of 12-0 and 18-6. Edinboro won the first four bouts with Korey Mines edging Parker 3-1 in sudden victory and the top three-ranked trio of A.J. Schopp, Mitchell Port and David Habat winning decisions over Beckman, Cruz and Switzer. In the highly-anticipated match at 133, Schopp scored a first period takedown and rode out the second to win 3-1 in what was a rematch of the NWCA All-Star Classic from November won by Schopp.

Minotti put Lehigh on the board with a second period pin of Kasey Davis. While leading in the second period Minotti began to let Davis up to his feet before quickly bringing him to his back for the fall at the 3:50 mark.

The Fighting Scots re-established a 12 point lead with wins on riding time at both 165 and 174. Casey Fuller and senior Santiago Martinez went through two rounds of overtime with 12 seconds of riding time for Fuller the difference in breaking a 7-7 tie. A 1:05 riding time advantage gave Patrick Jennings a 4-3 win over Peppelman.

Brown put the Mountain Hawks back on track with a 3-1 win over Vic Avery in a battle of ranked wrestlers at 184. Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro then sent junior John Bolich out to face Vince Pickett at 197. Bolich put Lehigh right back in the mix using a headlock to put Pickett on his back for a fall in 2:22. Bolich's win brought the Mountain Hawks within three at 18-15. Needing a bonus win to capture the dual for Lehigh Vollaro could only muster a 2-0 victory over Warren Bosch as Edinboro's 6-4 edge in bouts won was good enough to win on criteria.

The Mountain Hawks will return to action at the Southern Scuffle, January 1-2 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
