UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Lehigh women's cross country team competed at the 2014 NCAA Division I Mid-Atlantic Regional Friday afternoon, earning a 13th place team finish, just one place off of its regional ranking of 12. The day was highlighted by another strong effort by junior Elizabeth Weiler, earning a trip to the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship for her sixth-place performance, running the 6K in 20:38.
"Our team performance today was actually better than our league performance a couple weeks ago," said head coach Debbie Utesch. "We were aiming to score around 350 points and we ended scoring 356. It was a very good team effort; we had a stellar performance from graduate student Hannah Pierce who backed up our number one and two runners tremendously, and sophomore Ashley Strysko stepped up today, filling injured sophomore Amanda Ruschel's spot."
Weiler will be Lehigh's second ever female student-athlete to run at the NCAA Championship. The last time a Mountain Hawk from the women's cross country team qualified was in 2005 when Jen Schappert became the first runner in school history to do so. Weiler broke Schappert's Goodman Campus cross country course record earlier this season at the 41st annual Paul Short Run.
The Lehigh men's cross country team will be sending senior Ryan Mahalsky to the NCAA Championships as well for his fifth-place performance, which means that this will be the first time Lehigh has a man and woman competing in the championship in the same year.
"Weiler has had such a tremendous season; she's had her eye on going to the NCAA Championship all year," said Utesch. "She ran a smart race. She made people respond to her moves, especially when she broke up the front pack. Her hard work this season has really paid off. We're also so excited to be able to have both a man and woman from Lehigh run at NCAA's for the first time in school history."
Behind Weiler was senior Ingrid Simon who ended her cross country career at Lehigh on a high note. Simon finished the race in 64th place out of 207 runners with a time of 22:09. Behind Simon was Pierce who was just shy of her personal best time by three seconds, finishing her last collegiate race in 78th place with a time of 22:22. After Pierce was freshman Laura Barnes (91st/22:32), junior Arielle Weiner (117th/23:07), Strysko (120th/23:12), and senior Shannon Wright (132nd/23:27).
The NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship will be held at Indiana State Universty in Terre Haute, Ind. on November 22 at 12 p.m.
