BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's soccer team faces a tough non-league test Wednesday night when the Mountain Hawks head to 2013 national finalist Maryland. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from Maryland's Ludwig Field.
The Mountain Hawks will look to rebound from two league losses last week when Lehigh takes on the Terrapins. Lehigh is coming off a 2-0 loss to No. 22 Boston University Saturday night. Despite holding a 25-9 shot advantage, the Mountain Hawks couldn't find the back of the net as each team finished with five shots on goal. Lehigh carries a 6-5 overall record, including a 2-2 league mark, into Wednesday's midweek matchup.
Junior Jamie Luchini leads the squad offensively with ten points behind four goals and a pair of assists. Freshman Doyle Tuvesson follows with three goals and an assist, good for seven points. Juniors Brian Vail and Austin Decker, along with senior Ali Famili, have also scored goals for Lehigh this season. In goal, senior keeper Ciaran Nugent has tallied a 3.90 saves per game average to go along with a 0.765 save percentage and 1.19 GAA.
The Terps, a first-year member of the Big Ten, ride a two-game win streak into Wednesday's meeting and are coming off a big 4-0 win over No. 3 Penn State Sunday. Maryland erupted for a season-high four goals in the shutout of the two-time defending Big Ten champion Nittany Lions. Mael Corboz notched the first two goals of the game for the Terps and Alex Shinsky and Tsubassa Endoh each found the back of the net in the second half to hand Penn State its first loss of the year. The 2014 season has been a bit of an up-and-down campaign for the Terps as Maryland currently holds a 5-5-2 record. The Terps made it to the 2013 NCAA National Championship game a season ago, but fell 2-1 to Notre Dame.
Corboz leads the squad with 11 points behind five goals and an assist. Michael Sauers follows with two goals and a pair of assists, good for six points. Eight players have scored goals this season for the balanced Maryland attack. Zack Steffan has seen all the time in goal and owns a 0.88 GAA and .667 save percentage.
Maryland and Lehigh have met four times in the past and the Terps have won all four meetings. The Mountain Hawks put up a good fight in the most recent meeting in 2012, but fell 2-1 to then No. 1 Maryland at Ludwig Field.
Following Wednesday's matchup, the Mountain Hawks remain on the road to face Loyola Saturday at 5 p.m. The game will be broadcast for free on the Patriot League Network. Lehigh returns home on Tuesday Oct. 21 to face Fairleigh Dickinson at 7 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
