BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After opening its fall season at Bucknell last weekend, the Lehigh rowing team heads to Philadelphia on Saturday to compete in Navy Day on the Schuylkill River. The first race of the day begins at 8:15 a.m. and competition continues throughout the afternoon.
Â
Navy Day is a much larger regatta than last weekend, which featured Bucknell, Drexel and Lehigh squaring off. That race helped the student-athletes with race experience in preparation for bigger regattas they'll be facing this fall and spring.
Â
"With one race under your belt, the initial pre-race nerves calm a little bit especially for the rookie college athletes," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "I am expecting a much more composed race out of the upperclassmen with a focus on power and the technical changes we have worked on all week. We've made good changes, but they're not easy changes in how we row so holding the changes is going to be essential for us to be successful on Saturday and beyond."
Saturday's regatta is Lehigh's last fall event until the Rutgers Fall Classic on Nov. 8.
Â
"Obviously, we want to show a result that is at the top, but doing it in time trial format, you never know where you are during the race," said Conley. "You are completely on your own out there and it's you versus the clock. It can be a very tough internal struggle to race three miles without knowing exactly how you're doing in comparison to your competition."
Â
Last weekend was a learning experience as the Mountain Hawks faced two of the best crews in the region in Bucknell and Drexel. Conley looks for improvement from his team entering the winter and spring seasons.
Â
"We really focus on the idea of improving each and every day," said the fifth-year head coach. "Our expectation as a team is that we're definitely better than we were yesterday and we're going be faster tomorrow, so on race day we continue to be faster than the last time we touched our boat. I've definitely seen that from the team this week. "
With the final fall race nearly one month away, Saturday will give the crew invaluable experience to take into practice.
Â
"This race, as with all the fall races, is important for us to understand how to race," said Conley. "It teaches us how to stay within our own shells and not let the environment creep in and take us out of the race. It's very easy to get distracted in races. Learning how to take that out of the equation is exactly what all the top teams are able to do and something we definitely need to be focused on this weekend and all future races."
