Mountain Hawks head to Army 4-Way Saturday

1/9/2014 4:48:00 PM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh track and field teams will head to West Point, N.Y. on Saturday for their first competition in over a month at the Army 4-Way. The Mountain Hawks look to build upon the solid foundation that was set in the season-opening Fast Times Before Finals meet with their sights set on Patriot League Championships that are just six weeks away.

Lehigh will face host Army, Manhattan and Rider inside Gillis Field House when events begin at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The men's team began its season with impressive performances at the season-opening meet inside Rauch Fieldhouse on Dec. 6-7, highlighted by junior Adeolu Adesida setting a new Lehigh high jump record.  Adesida lept 2.18 meters, which also automatically qualifies him for the IC4A Championships in March, to break the record of 2.14m that was previously set in 2004. The junior's jump earned him the first Patriot League Field Athlete of the Week award of his career.

Sophomore Derek Knott, a wide receiver on Lehigh's football team, impressed in his first track meet as Lehigh's top finisher in both the long jump and 60m dash. Knott leapt 6.45m to claim fourth place and sprinted 60m in 7.08 seconds to finish second. Junior Christopher Watson claimed a victory in the 500m dash, finishing with a time of 1:06.47. The 4x800m relay group of Michell Biler, Seamus Cullinane, Sebastian Nicewicz and Caleb Grady grabbed second place with a time of 8:27.82.

The women's team got the season off to a good start with four first-place finishes and two ECAC Championship qualifying marks in the Fast Times Before Finals meet. Senior Brooke Astor placed first in three of the five pentathlon events to claim the pentathlon crown with a personal best and new Rauch Fieldhouse record 3,578 points, which also qualifies her for the ECAC Championships in March. Astor's performance earned her Patriot League Field Athlete of the Week recognition.

Senior Jimil Ataman impressed in the weight throw with an ECAC qualifying launch of 16.14m to claim first place in the event. Senior Danielle Albergo finished first in the 500m dash with a time of 1:16.48. Lehigh also claimed the top two spots in the 4x800m relay, with the quartet of Ann O'Connell, Lindsay Voltz, Brenna Clark and Victoria Mullane taking the top spot with a combined time of 9:53.79.

Following Saturday's meet in West Point, the Mountain Hawks will return home to host the Angry Birds Invitational on Saturday Jan. 18 in Rauch Fieldhouse. The following weekend, Lehigh hosts rival Lafayette in the annual Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet.
