Mountain Hawks finish first at Army 4-Way

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Lehigh women's track and field team finished first out of four teams at the Army 4-Way on Saturday inside Gillis Field House. The Mountain Hawks finished with 199 team points, edging out second-place Rider (182), Army (116) and Manhattan (108). Lehigh finished the day with seven first place finishes, three of which came from freshmen, in their first competition since the holiday break.
 
Freshman Courtney Avery put up one of the impressive newcomer performances, finishing first in the high jump with her ECAC qualifying mark of 1.70m.
 
Sophomore Carlie Skellington got Lehigh off to a good start, claiming first place in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 19:14.13. Freshman Anne Birkenmaier and sophomore Arielle Weiner followed right behind in second and third place, respectively.
 
Senior Brooke Astor crossed the line in first place in the 60 meter hurdles with a new personal best time of 8.77. Astor also jumped 5.42m to claim second in the long jump.
 
Senior Danielle Albergo finished first in the 400 meter dash with her blistering pace of 59.33. Classmate Jessica Kendzor picked up her own individual victory in the 500 meter run with a time of 1:18.55.
 
Freshman Amanda Ruschel shined in her first collegiate 800 meter run, finishing first with a mark of 2:21.11. Junior Victoria Mullane's time of 2:21.96 put her right behind in second place.
 
Freshman Brenna Clark claimed yet another Lehigh victory in the 1000 meter, finishing in 3:09.41. Junior Ingrid Simon claimed second place with her mark of 3:09.74.
 
Mullane, Ruchel, Kendzor and Simon were victorious in the 4x800 meter relay, finishing with an impressive time of 9:43.73.
 
Sophomore Jennifer Markham set a new personal record and finished second in the mile run, crossing the line in 5:10.68, less than a second behind Emily Ritter of Rider who placed first with a mark of 5:09.97.
 
The quartet of Albergo, Julia Patterson, Natalie Jacobs and Taryn Schmelzinger grabbed second place in the 4x400 meter relay, crossing the line in 4:08.56.
 
Senior Jimil Ataman was Lehigh's highest finisher in the weight throw, claiming third place with her launch of 15.87m.
 
The Mountain Hawks return home next weekend to host the Angry Birds Invitational on Saturday inside Rauch Fieldhouse.
