Lehigh hosts Angry Birds Invitational Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's and women's track and field teams continue their indoor season Saturday when the Mountain Hawks host the Angry Birds Invitational inside Rauch Fieldhouse. Lehigh will welcome Penn, Monmouth and Winthrop with the field events starting at 10 a.m. and track events beginning at 11 a.m.
In their most recent meet, the Lehigh women claimed the Army 4-Way title after defeating the Black Knights, Rider and Manhattan in West Point, N.Y. on Saturday Jan. 11. The Mountain Hawks claimed seven first-place finishes, three of which came from freshmen, in their first action since the holiday break.
Senior Jessica Kendzor garnered Patriot League Track Athlete of the Week recognition for her first-place finish in 500 meter run and 4x800 meter relay. Freshman Courtney Avery earned Patriot League Rookie of the Week following her first-place and ECAC qualifying 1.70m high jump.
Senior Danielle Albergo shined in the sprints, placing first in the 400 meter dash. Freshman Amanda Ruschel captured her first collegiate victory in the 800 meter run, while classmate Brenna Clark picked up yet another Lehigh victory in the 1000 meter run. The Mountain Hawks captured first through third in the 5,000 meter run, led by sophomore Carlie Skellington up front. Senior Brooke Astor continued to impress as well, claiming a first place finish in the 60 meter hurdles and second place in the long jump.
The Mountain Hawk men placed fourth in the Army 4-Way. Lehigh churned out six second place finishes at the meet in West Point, N.Y.
Junior Christopher Watson claimed second place in the 800 meter run, trailing only the event's defending Patriot League Champion. Senior Martin Otieno crossed the line in second in the 200 meter dash, while the quartet of Otieno, Watson, Justin Mahoney and Christopher Del Rossi raced their way to a second place finish in the 4x400 meter relay. Junior Sean Burke impressed on the distance side, crossing the line in 15:49.22 in the 5000 meter run.
Junior Derek Gaul and senior Ryan Paquin placed second and third, respectively, in the long jump, while freshman Daniel Boardman claimed another second place finish in the high jump.
Following Saturday's meet, the Mountain Hawks will remain home to host archrival Lafayette in the annual Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet on Saturday January 25 inside Rauch Fieldhouse.
