BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh women's track and field senior Jessica Kendzor and freshman Courtney Avery have been named Patriot League Track Athlete of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, as announced by the league on Tuesday.
Kendzor garnered Track Athlete of the Week honors after a pair of strong performances at Saturday's Army 4-Way that helped Lehigh claim the team title. The senior won the 500 meter run in a time of 1:18.55, besting the second-place runner by two seconds and narrowly missing out on an ECAC qualifying mark. Kendzor was also part of the victorious 4x800m relay team that crossed the finish line in 9:43.73, 24 seconds faster than the second-place team. This is Kendzor's first Track Athlete of the Week award and the first in the indoor season for any Mountain Hawk since 2007-08.
Avery was awarded Rookie of the Week honors following her first-place high jump at the Army Four-Way. The freshman jumped an ECAC qualifying mark of 1.70 meters to help Lehigh win the team title. Avery is Lehigh's first female indoor Rookie of the Week since Savanna Plombon earned the honor on Jan. 23, 2012.
The Mountain Hawks claimed the Army 4-Way title with 199 team points, edging out second-place Rider (182), Army (116) and Manhattan (108). Lehigh finished the day with seven first place finishes, three of which came from freshmen, in their first competition since the holiday break.
Kendzor, Avery and the Mountain Hawks will be back in action Saturday in Rauch Fieldhouse when Lehigh hosts the Angry Birds Invitational.
