BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh sophomore heavyweight Max Wessell was named EIWA Wrestler of the Week Monday after upsetting eighth-ranked JT Felix of Boise State in a dual meet Sunday in Boise, Idaho.
Felix started off the match with a takedown to take an early 2-0 lead, but Wessell responded with a double-leg takedown of his own, riding out the first period to lead 3-2. In the second period, Felix scored on a single leg takedown, and Wessel answered later in the period with an escape to make the score 4-4 going into the final stanza. Wessell escaped early in the third to lead 5-4 and held is ground for the remainder of the period, adding a counter-takedown in the final seconds of the match to earn his first ever top-20 victory by a final score of 7-4.
Wessell's victory helped the Mountain Hawks win the dual 35-6 as Lehigh won the final nine bouts after forfeiting the first bout at 197. The Boulder, Colo., native is now 6-2 overall this season.
The win was Wessell's second straight since coming back from an ankle injury sustained in Lehigh's season-opening dual against Bucknell on November 9. He returned to action with a major decision win over Navy's Colynn Cook on January 17.
The Mountain Hawks (7-5) will be off this weekend and will return to action when they host Rutgers Saturday February 8 at 7 p.m. inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.
