Women’s hoops part of WBCA Academic Top 25

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's basketball team was recognized for its tremendous work in the classroom, coming in at number 12 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Academic Top 25 Honor Roll, as announced on Thursday. The Mountain Hawks posted a team GPA of 3.498 during the 2012-13 season as the top Patriot League school.
"I am very proud of how our players and program have represented themselves as student-athletes at Lehigh," said head coach Sue Troyan. "These are highly competitive young women who look to excel in everything they do at Lehigh. To be recognized as one of the top academic performing teams in the country speaks volumes about their drive, work ethic and desire to achieve at the highest level."
The WBCA Academic Top 25 annually recognizes women's basketball teams across the nation in NCAA Divisions I, II and III, the NAIA and junior/community colleges that carry the highest combined grade point averages (GPAs) inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season. The 2012-13 season is the 18th in which the WBCA has produced the honor rolls.
The award continues a string of honors for Lehigh in the classroom. Eleven Mountain Hawks earned a spot on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, tied with Holy Cross for most honorees in the Patriot League. Recently-graduated Kelly Peterson was named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team.
Utah Valley held the number one spot with a 3.639 GPA. Other leaders included Ohio Dominican University in Division II with a 3.699 GPA, Gustavus Adolphus College from Division III held a 3.600 GPA, Vanguard University out of the NAIA posted a 3.610 GPA, and the Junior/Community Colleges was headed by Snow College with a 3.583 GPA.
Founded in 1981, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association promotes women's basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game as a sport for women and girls.
