BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off two strong efforts to begin the spring season, the Lehigh rowing team looks to continue the success on Saturday at the Neuweiler Plate in Lewisberry, Pa. The Mountain Hawks have enjoyed success at the Neuweiler Plate, winning the regatta each of the past two years.
“The team is in a good place after having two good weekends of racing,” said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. “We have typically struggled at the Murphy Cup and this past weekend showed that the team is significantly faster than it was two years ago. We definitely have a strong group of freshmen and the varsity has started to discover some competitive speed this season as well. We're rowing well enough to compete at a high level, but now we really need to make sure we are pushing as hard as possible every stroke to get ourselves stronger.”
The Lehigh men won the Neuweiler Plate last season while the women's squad came in second, this after Lehigh won the overall team trophy in 2011. Last year, the Men's Varsity Eight, Men's Freshmen Eight and Women's Freshmen Eight all finished first to lead the way.
“You really have to appreciate the past because it has a great deal to do with where the team is now,” said Conley. “However, we have not discussed [past success at the Neuweiler Plate] at all because we do know that every year is different and there are different teams that come as guests to this regatta, so things can change each and every year. We hope that we have found enough speed to keep our momentum going this year.

“This group is pretty resilient and have a confidence about their ability that I have not seen here before,” Conley continued. “It's great and at the same time, we are trying to keep ourselves grounded that there's a lot of work still to do. We definitely want to be faster and want to compete at the highest level and we are still learning how high that level is that we can reach.”
The Mountain Hawks will return to action at the Knecht Cup next Saturday (Apr. 13).
