Mountain Hawks soar at Penn Relays and Lehigh Games

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In preparation for next weekend's Patriot League Championships, the Lehigh men's track and field team excelled at both the Penn Relays in Philadelphia and the Lehigh Games at the Goodman Campus. No team scores were kept at either last chance qualifying meet.
Junior captain Tyler Mueller had the highest finish of any Lehigh athlete, including men and women, at the Penn Relays when he finished third in the 5000 meter run with a time of 14:22.25. Sophomore Ryan Mahalsky, junior James Miller and junior Samuel Bernitt finished in eighth, ninth and 11th place respectively in the event. Lehigh had a top 10 qualifier in the Olympic Development 5000 meter run, as freshman Evan Hardy ran to an eighth place time of 14:43.16.
The Mountain Hawks' 4x400 and 4x200 relay teams also competed in Philadelphia. Sophomore Christopher Watson, senior Devin Monroe, sophomore Justin Mahoney and junior Martin Otieno ran the 4x400 in 3:21.03 to garner sixth place. Sophomore Robert Hugin competed in Watson's place on the 4x200 squad.
Lehigh competitors won nine of 18 events at the Lehigh Games including four one-two finishes. Adesida broke the school record in the high jump with a leap of 2.12 meters. Vaclav Malek had the old record of 2.11 meters since 2005. Junior Patrick Ciez finished in second at 2.00 meters. Senior Ryan Knouse and freshman Peter Schwarzenberger finished first and second in the 5000 meter run with times of 15:40.04 and 15:59.55 respectively. Sophomore Casey Gilboy also came out on top in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:01.60.
Mahoney and Watson ended up first and second in the 400 meter dash, finishing just 0.42 seconds apart. Monroe emerged as the strongest sprinter at the meet, winning the 100 meter dash in 10.74 seconds and the 200 meter dash in 21.77 seconds.
Seven Mountain Hawks rounded out the top 10 in the 800 meter run, with junior Kenneth Wilkinson winning the event in 1:54.38. Sophomore Mitchell Biler followed closely behind in second (1:54.96), while sophomore Simon Voorhees, junior John Ciavardelli, junior Nicholas Molloy, sophomore Gregory Caldwell and sophomore Stephen Keith took the fourth through eighth spots. Ciavardelli competed on Lehigh's 4x400 meter relay team that took first place. He ran to a time of 3:33.37 with sophomore Sebastian Nicewicz, freshman Caleb Grady and freshman Branden Martinez.
The Mountain Hawks will host the Patriot League Championships on May 3 and 4 at the Goodman Campus for the first time since 2007.
