BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Playing its final four-game stretch of the regular season, the Lehigh baseball team dropped a pair of games to Navy in a Patriot League doubleheader Saturday. The Mountain Hawks' 5-3 loss in game one cost them a chance at postseason play while the 6-1 defeat in the nightcap made them 18-27 overall and 5-13 in league play.
“They out executed us today and it's disappointing,” Lehigh head coach Sean Leary said. “We worked so hard to get to the playoffs and when you know it's not going to happen it's a tough day, but they were the better team today.”
The program honored its four graduating seniors---Steven Ball, Tom O'Malley, Cameron Phillips and Casey Turner---in an on-field ceremony prior to game one. Three of the four players were members of the last Lehigh squad to earn a Patriot League Tournament berth in 2010.
Greg Dupell led off the top of the second inning of game one with a double, while Chris Campbell and Brad Borosak had RBI hits off junior starter Colin Gotzon to give the Midshipmen (26-20, 11-7 PL) a 3-0 lead. Lehigh got on the scoreboard after sophomore Connor Faust executed a bunt single in the bottom half of the frame. A two-run double by David Wiedeman the following inning put Navy ahead 5-1, but the Mountain Hawks responded with a pair of two-out singles from juniors Joe Abeln and Brandon Wilt that cut the deficit to 5-3 after four innings.
Freshman Mike Garzillo finished the opener 2-for-3 and scored two runs to raise his season total to 22. Greg Dupell led Navy's offense, going 2-for-2 with two runs, and Wiedeman had two RBI.
The Midshipmen had a two-out rally off junior starter Nick Cassell in third inning of game two. Navy began the scoring with a two-run single by Brandon Beans. An RBI hit by Dave Milanes in the next at bat gave Navy a 3-0 advantage. Lehigh's best chance to score came in bottom half of the inning, but Brong grounded into a 6-4-3 double play with runners on first and second.
A sliding catch by Wilt limited the fifth inning damage by the Midshipmen, but Navy had already taken a 5-0 lead after another RBI single by Currie. Lehigh's only run of the game was produced in the fifth inning when sophomore Pat Walshe came home on a wild pitch by Luke Gillingham.
Gillingham threw a complete game, giving up only seven hits and one earned run to get the win. Cassell was tagged for the loss.
The Brown and White will host Navy in another doubleheader to conclude the 2013 season. First pitch from the Goodman Campus is slated for 12 p.m. Sunday.
