SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – In its final non-league game of the 2013 regular season, the Lehigh baseball team lost to Seton Hall 17-7. The Brown and White enter their final four games of the year with an 18-25 record after the contest and the Pirates improve to 22-16.
Seton Hall took a quick 5-0 lead in the first inning after drawing three walks and stealing three bases against sophomore starter Josh Flyer. The inning also featured a two-out, two-run double by Tyler Boyd.
“We got off to a slow start and didn't pitch effectively, but I give our offense credit for the way battled throughout the whole game,” Lehigh head coach Sean Leary said.
Three consecutive two-out doubles by Annunziata, Chris Selden and Boyd in the fourth made it 11-4, but senior Steven Ball got out of a bases loaded, two out jam in the next inning to prevent Seton Hall from increasing its lead.
Abeln smacked a two-run double in the eighth after consecutive singles by Turner and sophomore Patrick Walshe. The hits were part of a three run burst off Mike Genovese, who had started the game at second base for Seton Hall.
Turner ended the contest 3-for-4 at the plate and scored two runs, while Abeln went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI. Lehigh had runners in scoring position for six out of its nine turns at bat, but left 12 on base. Zack Weigel and Annunziata both hit 3-for-5 and scored three runs apiece, while Boyd had three RBI. Both teams used six pitchers in the game with Flyer taking the loss and Ricky Mangione earning the victory after throwing 1.1 scoreless innings in relief.
The Mountain Hawks will host Navy in a pair of doubleheaders with a spot in the Patriot League Tournament on the line. Lehigh needs a four game sweep of the Midshipmen to qualify for postseason play. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Lehigh will honor its four graduating seniors in the program---Ball, Tom O'Malley, Cameron Phillips and Turner---in a pre-game on-field ceremony prior to Saturday's series opener.
“They're a great group of guys and we appreciate the effort and dedication they've put into the program,” Leary said of the senior class. “We just want to play hard for them and send them out with a chance to perform in the playoffs.”
