Lehigh gets off to quick start, but falls at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Lehigh women's lacrosse team scored five of the first six goals, but Holy Cross responded with a vengeance as the Crusaders came back to down the Mountain Hawks, 14-6 on Friday. Lehigh's five goals came in the game's first 8:42, but it wasn't enough. Senior Julie McBrien and sophomore Carli Sukonik scored two goals apiece to lead the way.
“We had a very strong start tonight, but did not maintain our aggression for 60 minutes,” said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. “That, coupled with unforced turnovers, was the difference.”
Freshman Kendall Garden gave Lehigh a 1-0 advantage less than two minutes into the game. Holy Cross answered just 1:20 later, but the Mountain Hawks came back with four straight tallies. All four came in the span of 4:17, beginning with a McBrien goal at 25:23 and ending with another McBrien score at 21:16. Junior Chelsea Retaleato and Sukonik scored in between.
With Lehigh up 5-1, Holy Cross scored five straight to end the half for a 6-5 advantage after 30 minutes of play. The Crusaders extended their run to 8-0 before Sukonik pulled Lehigh right back within three (9-6) at 14:14, but Holy Cross scored the final five goals for the 14-6 final.
The Crusaders held the edge in shots (23-14), groundballs (20-13) and draw controls (12-10). Junior Alexandra Fitzpatrick made four saves before being relieved late by senior MaryLeah DiNisco who made one. Holy Cross' Sarah Weber made five stops for Holy Cross.
Lehigh wraps up its season at 4-12 and 1-5 in Patriot League play, but a young team showed strong flashes. The Mountain Hawks dropped two one-goal finals in league play while enjoying impressive stretches against some of the nation's best.
