LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – Two runs in the ninth inning were not enough for the Lehigh baseball team, which fell to Rider 6-4 in a non-league game that was rescheduled from last month. Both teams turned two double plays in the contest, but the Mountain Hawks left 11 runners on base to drop to 17-15 on the season. Rider stands at 17-12 after the victory on Sonny Pittaro Field.
Lehigh turned two in the first inning when Nick Crescenzo fouled out to right field and Mike Parsons was thrown out at third base. Sophomore starter Josh Flyer got Ken Kremer hit into a second double play in the fourth inning before Lee Lipinski was caught stealing to end the Broncs' offensive threat.
Back-to-back doubles by Garzillo and senior Casey Turner in the seventh made the game 4-2 and forced Rider to bring in Sean Kuberiet. Abeln to ground into a fielder's choice, and Kuberiet got sophomore John Elson to ground into a double play with runners on the corners to cut Lehigh's rally short.
The Mountain Hawks clawed back in the ninth inning, loading the bases with no one out before Abeln drew a walk off Zach Mawson to bring Lehigh within three. Elson grounded out into another double play that brought Turner home to make it 6-4, but that would be as close as Lehigh would get.
Garzillo went 2-for-4 and scored three runs from the leadoff spot for Lehigh. Adam Wayman finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Mike Parsons hit 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Rider used six different pitchers, but it was Joe Calogero who earned the victory after striking out four and allowing just two hits over the game's first five innings. Kyle Kennett picked up his first career save after coming in for Mawson to get the final three outs against Lehigh's final batters. Long took the hard luck loss after allowing four runs, only one of which was earned, in two innings on the mound.
The Brown and White return to the Goodman Campus for a six-game home stand that begins with a single game against Delaware State at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. Lehigh will also play a pair of Patriot League doubleheaders against Bucknell that begin at 12 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
