Lehigh falls against Delaware State in rain-shortened game

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Bad weather ended hopes of a comeback by the Lehigh baseball team in a 10-8 loss against Delaware State on Wednesday on the Goodman Campus. The game, which featured four lead changes, was called due to a thunderstorm with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. The Mountain Hawks drop to 17-16 with the non-league loss and the Hornets improve to 21-10.

“We felt like if this game had gone the distance we would have had a good shot to compete and win,” Lehigh head coach Sean Leary said. “But both teams had a chance to score as many runs as they could in six innings and they happened to win.”

Lehigh fell into an early 2-0 hole after RBI hits from Ryan Haas and Aaron Nardone, but a triple by sophomore Justin Pacchioli kick started the Lehigh offense. Senior Casey Turner grounded out to second to bring Pacchioli home for the Brown and White's first run. After junior Joe Abeln drew a two-out walk, sophomore John Elson smacked a two-run homer to right off Zach Adkins that put the Mountain Hawks ahead 3-2.

Freshman starter Kevin Boswick got around a leadoff double in the second to escape with a scoreless inning, but the Hornets struck back with two runs in the third when Mike Alexander hit an RBI double and scored on an error.

The Brown and White enjoyed a three-run fifth inning with a sacrifice fly from junior Tyler Brong, Abeln coming home on an error by JP Frey and Garzillo picking up an RBI on a fielder's choice. Lehigh took its 6-5 lead into the sixth inning, but found itself down after one swing of the bat when Aaron Nardone hit a grand slam off junior Joey McNamara to break a 6-6 tie.

Lehigh started to erase the 10-6 deficit as rain began to fall. Pacchioli hit an RBI single, and scored after Brong reached on a fielder's choice that avoided an inning-ending double play. Elson struck out swinging in what would be Lehigh's final at bat. Sophomore Rene Tato recorded two outs in the seventh before the game was halted for 30 minutes, then called early.

Pacchioli hit 4-for-4 in the shortened affair, while Brong and Elson each posted two RBIs. Nardone was 2-for-5 with a game-high 5 RBI. Alexander had two RBI and scored four runs to go along with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. George Michael picked up the win on the mound while freshman Brandon Kulp took the loss.
Lehigh will host Bucknell in a pair of Patriot League doubleheaders that begin at 12 p.m. Saturday and and Sunday at the Goodman Campus. Live audio of Saturday's doubleheader will be available at Lehighsports.com.
